Manuscripts as Artifacts

The stage needs to be set. Hurtado argues that it is hard to identify any art, architecture, epigraphical evidence or whatever before 200 CE/AD. The earliest building dates to the middle of the third century. Manuscripts that can be dated with any confidence are dated to the third century. However there are some 400 papyri that can be dated to the time before the official recognition of Christianity by the Emperor Constantine. A growing number can be dated to the second century. Hurtado claims it is these which are the earliest Christian artifacts, and he focuses not on textual criticism but what can be found in the texts.

It is a fluke of history that most of the earliest Christian manuscripts come from Egypt due to the weather. Of these it appears that many came from a refuse dump of an ancient city called Oxyrhynchus. Thousands of manuscripts have been found there deposited over six centuries. Do these reflect broader Christian use? Hurtado does not intend to treat early Christian preferences monolithically, but he does argue that there are sufficient reasons for treating the manuscript evidence from Egypt as being practiced widely. For example, Christian networking brought a copy of Iranaeus' Against Heresies from Lyon to Oxyrhynchus within a few years.

The most outstanding feature of Christian manuscripts is that they are codex in form. A codex is unlike a rolled scroll. A codex is folded leaves attached by binding materials much like modern books. Christians did not invent the codex but by the second century, over 70 per cent of Christian writings were codices compared to only 5 per cent of the total number of manuscripts. It has been argued that Christians preferred the codex for such reasons as the expense of writing. However large margins do not indicate a writer concerned about saving costs. Hurtado argues that the Christian preference for the codex was heavy and early and reflected a belief that the text had "scriptural status."

In addition to a codex format, early Christians added other characteristics to their manuscripts, nomina sacra and the staurogram. Nomina sacra are typically abbreviations composed of the first and last letter of a word. Those used with far greater regularity are God, Lord, Christ, and Jesus. This early practice is connected to the Jewish practice of treating the divine name in a special way. Hurtado notes that at an early stage Christ and Jesus were put on the same plane as God and Lord. The staurogram is a compendium formed by superimposing a Greek rho over a Greek tau. In later Christianity the chi-rho became better known. Hurtado believes that the cross over the T formation was a visual reference for the early Christian to the crucifixion of Jesus.

Very early Christians chose a particular format for their sacred writings and implanted into them code devices of their own faith.

Manuscripts as Evidence

If, like me, you find the study of New Testament textual criticism somewhat less than thrilling, you might enjoy this new study by Professor Larry Hurtado. Prof. Hurtado focuses on a neglected aspect of New Testament studies: the ancient manuscripts as artifacts. This involves a number of features, such as the physical form of the manuscript (the codex, the roll, and opisthograph), corrections and mistakes in copying, words that were emphasized in certain ways, and the location of the manuscript. These "artifactual" features of the texts give insight into the early Christian movement.

While it doesn't appear that more intense study of early Christian manuscripts will lead to any bombshells for the study of Christian origins, Prof. Hurtado's findings and conclusions are interesting. Consider the question of gnosticism. The "Gnostic" Christians didn't make extensive use of John's Gospel. In fact, it was more popular among the "orthodox" Christians. In addition, it doesn't appear that any apocryphal Gospel texts were physically attached to the canonical Gospels.

A study of the ancient texts raises a number of questions as well. For example, most ancient manuscripts from the time of the NT texts are in roll form, however the early Christians preferred the codex (the precursor to our books) for reasons that remain unclear. In addition, the number of manuscripts of certain NT works - such as Hebrews, and Revelation - is quite interesting in light of later controversies that developed surrounding them. I saw surprised to learn that there are more copies of the Shepherd of Hermas than almost any NT book.

Prof. Hurtado provides an interesting case study of the apocryphal Gospel of Thomas. Although any conclusions are preliminary given that only three manuscripts are extant, a study of them tends to indicate that it wasn't viewed as scripture (at least by those groups connected to the manuscripts).

A plea to look at all the evidence

Hurtado has written a number of brilliant books on the subject of earliest Christianity. Now he asks an obvious question: why not consider all the evidence?

There are some 400 Christian related pieces of papyri dated to before Constantine. From the second and third centuries we have 12 fragments of Matthew, 1 of Mark, 7 of Luke, 16 of John, and 7 of Acts, 4 of Hebrews, not to mention many others. Hermas, for example, is well represented.
Why is this evidence so rarely used?

Investigating the subject, Hurtado makes many interesting points. While the orthodox Christian writings seem to have been transmitted with great care, the Gnostic Gospel of Thomas "was transmitted with a noticeable fluidity in contents and arrangement" (p 34).

It appears that Paul's epistles were bound together in codex form sometime around 100 and "this edition of Pauline epistles was prepared with a concern for textual accuracy" (p 39), as Zuntz has argued. Hurtado wonders if this might have been one of the reasons the early Christians preferred the codex to the roll. Various scholars have suggested other reasons the codex was preferred. It might have been less costly, held more text, or perhaps it was simply a familiar form, as an early missionary carried a traveling codex. Hurtado can only suggest the possibilities; no one can yet give a reason for the Christian preference for the codex.

The nomina sacra is yet one more textual mystery. Christian scribes abbreviated the first and final letters of some word, something like a contraction. It is likely that "the abbreviation of Jesus' name as lH arose from early Christian piety" (p 118). The tau-rho is yet another example of Christian piety and seems to have spread widely and quickly among scribes.

Aspects that cry for greater investigation: Christian manuscripts were also unusual in the amount of reader's aids. Does this indicate aid to gospels being read liturgically? What can be gleaned about the meaning and importance of how the early Christians read the gospels based upon these aids?

The Before & After Life of Katie Beers

Twenty years after the Jan 13, 1993 abduction of the then ten year old girl made headlines, Katie Beers has published her story. During the seventeen days she was held chained and captive in an underground prison the size of a tiny closet, the police investigated and discovered that she was suffering abuse at home: being severely neglected by her mother and abused and molested by a couple who lived with and preyed on her family. The school system, neighbors, and police failed her miserably through the first 10 years of her life. Her brother, six years her senior, was her one hero, but when he tried to protect her he was horribly abused as well.

Often in these cases, after the abuse comes to light, the child goes through many other horrible mis-handlings through failings of the foster care and legal system. Not so here. Her foster parents become her Mom and Dad, she thrived in school, received the counseling she needed, and was able to love and be loved and have healthy adult relationships.

This is an amazing account, if it were not true no one would believe it. It is exceptionally well written by a reporter who covered the crime and continued to hold a deep interest for Katie Beers over the years. The first half of the book tells the story from start to finish and then the second half moves into more details on the crime including absolutely chilling transcripts of audio recordings made by her captor during the time she was held prisoner.

I read through the book quickly cover to cover to know the story. I will most definitely read it over again, slowly, for the wisdoms of this brave and resilient survivor. My hope for Katie Beers is that the telling of her story is not only healing for her but freeing for others and that it will lead to her capture (who can be paroled anytime) to remain safely behind bars.

Buried Memories: Katie Beers' Story

From the first page, I couldn't put this book down. I became so attached to Katie, a child with an incredible spirit that despite all of the neglect and abuse, somehow survives. I fell in love with her and had to keep reading to see what exactly happened to her. I loved the dual perspective from both the child herself and the reporter who from the beginning covered the story. I feel as if I got to know not only Katie but the other "players" both good and bad in her life. Despite the incredible sadness and shock I experienced at times reading the book, in the end it was so inspiring and uplifting! Great read!!

Extraordinary Chronicle of Courage and Survival

I didn't recall much about this story other than vague memories of the evening news showing the rescued little girl in a blue jacket being whisked away from the cameras. Recently, I saw a news story of her and learned the little girl, now all grown up, had co-aurthored a book about surviving her ordeal. Admittedly, I purchased the book because of an interest in high-profile crimes and crime solving. I was expecting an account of the story from the POVs of the victim and a news reporter close to the story. What I was not expecting was to be so captivated by Katie's spirit and courage. I could not put this book down. There are many details that come to light in the book that I won't spoil for the readers - other than to say it's a truly extraordinary chronicle of courage and survival well worth the time to read.

The field of applied superconductivity has been transformed since the first edition by new materials and fabrication techniques, and by innovative device and circuit concepts. In this new edition, two leading experts provide an up-to-date guide to the theory and practice of applied superconductivity.

Preface to the Second Edition
Several exciting major developments have changed the field of applied superconductivity since 1981, when the first edition of this text was published. New materials and fabrication methods and innovative device and circuit concepts have made profound changes in the way we practice in this field. The most public of the changes was the discovery in 1986 of high-temperature oxide superconductors, several of which quickly were shown to have transition temperatures above the boiling point of nitrogen. Equally important but less publicly obvious was a pair of key innovations in the fabrication of superconductive integrated circuits. A way of making high quality, durable niobium tunnel junctions and a procedure to avoid any processing steps intervening in the fabrication of the junctions, has led to stable, well controlled integrated circuits. New concepts in superconductive detectors and mixers has made superconductivity the technology of choice in millimeter wave radio astronomy. And in the digital field, innovative ideas for single flux quantum logic and for hybridization with semiconductor devices have brought new opportunities. To date, the high-temperature superconductors have had their major impacts in magnetometers and microwave receivers. The greatly reduced refrigerator burden when using these materials compared with the metal superconductors has stimulated very extensive research on making cables for extremely high field magnets, and optimism for use in power systems.

The basic theory of superconductivity we presented in the 1981 edition is still very useful. There is, as yet, no accepted theory of electron pairing in the high-temperature superconductors and much of the practical work, including that on high-temperature superconductors, still relies on the theories in this book. Phenomenological theories have been developed to explain the behavior of high-temperature superconductors. And the low-temperature metallic superconductors continue to be of major importance, not least because of the success of Nb-Ti alloy in MRI magnets, by far the largest commercial market for superconductors. The low-temperature superconductor wire technology has matured over the past two decades and continues to make impressive progress. On the other hand, the fast pace of development of the physics and technology of the high-temperature superconductors presents us with a difficult choice. We have chosen to present a practical view of the current position, but freely admit that new results in this rapidly changing field may lead to a complete reappraisal.

Between us two co-authors, we have had several decades of experience with applications of superconductivity, both in the university and in industry. We have attempted to infuse the presentations, particularly of the electronics part, with our practical views that we hope will be helpful to the readers.

We thank several colleagues in the field including John Clarke, James Lukens, V. K. Kaplunenko, William McGrath, Oleg Mukhanov, Paul Richards, Andrew Smith, Stephen Whiteley, Yongming Zhang, who were very helpful with suggestions on sections in their areas of special expertise and in providing valuable data. Excellent textbook on superconducting electronics

This book starts from the basic physics of superconductivity and deals with superconducting devices, such as SQUIDs, SIS mixers and Single Flux Quantum devices. The treatments of each device are based on the current research, so that readers easily get the front of the fields. It also includes a prenty of important papers as the references and thus you can easily get into the deep level. I found one disadvantage that there is no statements on single electron/Cooper pair tunneling phenomena. I recommend this book for the persons to study superconducting electronics from students to the experts in this field. This book is valuable even for the persons who read the first editon because each treatments are updated.

How do ya wanna play?

This book isn't for a person who can pick out a tune by ear, and is happy with that. This book is for the person trying to teach themselves banjo, and isn't happy with just picking out what they hear without any rhyme or reason. This book gives you not only the how of picking, but also the why and the when of different styles. It will be a lot easier going through this book with an instructor who teaches musical elements in regards to the banjo, but quite doable on you own.

Lots of information in a skinny book

This is a good book for intermediate level players looking to expand there ability to play in all keys. The author gives you diagrams on how chord forms (major, minor, 6th, 7th etc) relate to a given position as well as how to find these chords across the fret board. It has some simple exercises related to each roadmap, but working through this book could take several years if you wanted to design your own exercises based on each chord formation in each key. It is a deceptively thin book for all the information held within. I would not recommend it to brand-new players because the lesson design is not really geared toward getting a new player to play arrangements. If you have played through Jack Hatfield's 1st book on 5 string banjo playing (go to his website), then the material presented in this book will make sense to you; and it is an excellent resource for learning the fretboard.

Superb Scholarship

Pflugfelder's book, the product of 20 years of research, provides a necessary foundation for students of Japanese history and sexology. What is much more, he resists reinforcing the kinds of master narratives that this kind of history usually inforces. "Homosexual," for instance, becomes not an identity but a term situated in time and space with certain uses by and for certain people. His Foucauldian approach focuses mostly on shifts and resists any notion of progress. I think this book is important to students of History as a model for their own scholarship, not just as a substantial contribution to the more specific field of Japanese Studies.

INTERESTING STUDY

It is very interesting to read a this kind of book for us Japanese. However, as far as I know, we don't have a religious prejudice to homosexuality at all, therefore it sounds a little bit strange that in Meiji-era the goverment of Japan made a "Sodomy Law" imitating the western countries (though directly from the Manchurian China/Qing)---- of course it was soon repealed.
I prefer to read a book on male/male love of pre-Tokugawa period, since in those days, especially in Muromachi/Azuchi-Momoyama-period, male homoeroticism was most flourished and prosperous.
And I also want to read about the history of male-love in Korea, Tibet and Southeastern Asia.

It's a bird. It's a plane. Nope, it's Hawk.

I'm always sad to see one of Kathi's series end, but I know it's going to be the perfect good-bye. Hawk is no exception. We've seen the other pride members find their mates, now it's Hawk's turn.

First, Awnia, his fated mate, is powerful. Supremely so. She's a Sun goddess (how cool, right?) and has some royal (hint, hint) blood flowing through her veins. But, those same powers also cause to her be hunted. I won't say by who, nanner nanner nanner, because it's a big part of the story. Thankfully, Awnia is able to get through to Vinnie, a dragon and member of the Pride from a previous book in the series. They have a history together and can communicate telepathically when he's in his human form. Vinnie enlists Hawk's help in finding Awnia. His ability to shift into a hawk comes in mighty handy. Awnia is found and taken to a safe place on Pride land.

Meanwhile, we also learn a little more about Hawk. The place he found Awnia in is his hometown. He decides to visit his childhood home, where he is welcomed by Deacon and Margo. They've worked for his parents for years and love him. But we learn he hasn't spoken to his parents in years because they are evil people who don't deserve the title parents. They've always felt Hawk was a monster and tried to have him "fixed." Add in the fact that Hawk is an elite shifter, can shift into numerous animals, and they will go to any lengths to try and get rid of him. Did you catch that? Any lengths.

Hawk and Awnia meet as she's on her way to Hawk's house for a Pride meeting about her situation. Hawk knows right away she's his mate, but Awnia was always told she could never have a mate. She decides to be with him for as long as she can, while trying to keep everyone safe. Of course, Hawk won't let her deny their connection. She's his and he's hers. Psst...Hawk can be very persuasive. ;-)

There's love, danger, sexy times, mysteries are solved, lies are revealed, and a family is reunited. I loved Hawk and Awnia together and it was great catching up with the couples from the previous books. I'm going to miss these characters, so thank goodness for rereads. I highly recommend this book, but do suggest you read the series in order for continuity and full enjoyment of the characters.

A special shifter needs a special mate

We say good by to another series that I am going to miss. I enjoyed the diversified characters and pairings of our favorite characters. Hawk was special so he needed a special mate and Ms. Barton gave him a goddess. Awnia is a powerful being with powerful enemies, when she is hurt she finds herself with Samuel's pride. Never expecting to find a mate she pushes Hawk away to keep him safe. I really like them as a couple, they filled a void that the other was missing. They both needed love , to give love and to trust they were loveable. The story was easy to follow and read fast. The power of love, family, friendship and the magic between all the characters is amazing to read about. They rally to protect their own from any and all threat. Hawk keeping true to his abilities always makes me smile and the necromancer ability adds some fun. My only fault with the story is the confrontation with Temptress, it was built up to be something major enough to frighten a goddess but seemed anticlimactic when it happened. Still a good read and I look forward to moving on to another series by this author.

Another great ending to another series

Oh again another series comes to an end. I'll be wondering what to do with my life again for a bit and probably end up rereading the series all over again because then it won't feel like it's over completely.

Two people who never thought they would ever find a mate for them meet and instant sparks!

Hawk is an elite shifter with some unique abilities. He doesn't believe he may ever find a mate who will look beyond the weird abilities to the man he is and love him.

Awnia is a goddess that has been cursed by her mother and lives on the Earth realm. Vinnie and her met hundreds of years ago, now she must call upon him again to come help her before she dies at the hands of the Hatter. Awnia knows she's bounds to be alone until her mother finds her and kills her, for if she were to find a mate, Temptress (her mother) would kill him.

Can Hawk convince her they are destine to be together. Will their bond withstand the many obstacles about to be place before them?

Excellent Homeopathic Reference!

I first saw this book at a friend's house and was amazed. My friend personally knew Roger Morrison, MD, the author. The book is amazing. It lists the homeopathic remedy, frequently found symptoms, a starred symptom denoting that this is the most important remedy for this symptom, italicized notes listing other important remedies for this symptom, bold typed symptoms -a true keynote for this remedy, a section of combined symptoms indicating this remedy, and a list of other remedies that are similar. While it is mostly for the professional, I think if a person knows a bit about homeopathy then they could use it. I find it an amazing reference book that I will keep by my homeopathic remedies.
I first came to homeopathy after having so many problems with traditional medicine. I have adverse reactions to nearly everything with some severe- I felt I had nothing to lose by trying it. I have been a believer ever since and have been taking homeopathic remedies for more than 14 years.
One note:my new book was printed in India. Seller disclosed that even though it is new there are spots on the paper. Thanks to the honest seller. The contents are the gem!

A informative book for us laymens.

WOW!!!

I've been looking on the web at making fuel for some time and never felt I was getting the whole picture. This is ALL the info you will ever need on the subject. From system setup throught dealing with waste, this book explains it all in laymens terms. It shows that making fuel is not going to be the easyest thing you ever do. In the same breath, it shows that its within reach of us "normal" people.

It really a very informative but light read. Not only the process is reviewed, but also the economics and history. Definitly worth the read weither you want to make fuel, or just learn more about the subject.

Truly Comprehensive

I thought the summary of this book was a little vague in the product description section, and I was a little worried I wouldn't be getting a book that actually explains how to build your own biodiesel refinery. My fears were for naught though; as it turns out, the author gives detailed schematics and explanations of all the components of his own refinery he himself built, even including pipe coupling sizes. He also includes an entire chapter on how to operate the system. And if you don't have the means (like myself) or ability to build a plant as sophisticated as the author's, he even gives an overview of a much more rudimentary system that someone else built, but by the time one finishes the book, more than likely it will seem better to just save up the extra money and do it the right way.

This is a very unbiased book, providing lots of scientific data and tests to support different points the author tries to make in favor and against home brewing biodiesel. I found out everything I was hoping to about building my own biodiesel refinery.
