A simply amazing and beautiful thick tome of inventions

I spotted this book while walking through Powell's Bookstore and thumbed through it a bit. Wrote the title down and ordered it when I got home.

The book is an amazing compendium of inventions with detailed images, cutaway drawings, and background text. It covers all of human history with an obvious bias towards the technological present. Though I've owned it now a couple of months, I have only scratched at the surface of the information in the book. Reading articles here and there and then being led online to search for more detail. An excellent book for the internet era.

Good, easy read for the kiddos

Good, easy read for the kiddos. Keeps your kids interested in what will happen next...even if you have kids with attention issues! Great for summer reading or to just build vocabulary/reading confidence :). I have purchased more books from this series. A must buy for parents trying to get kids reading and off the video games!!!!

Mysterious Island is a pretty good book.

Mysterious Island was a pretty good book. We liked the wizardry in it. We thought the title the Icky Bugs was quite funny. One great character was Princess Keeah because she was magical. We liked the magical rainbow stairs because they sounded so pretty. Galen Longbeard was another favorite. Lord Sparr was a great evil villain! We liked Neal. Maw was a cool spider troll. Most of us were surprised when he spun his trap. You must read this book. We think 8-25 year olds would like this book. This book would be enjoyed by people who like Magic Treehouse books. It is sort of like Lord of the Rings.

Osage, a language of the Dhegiha branch of the Siouan family, was spoken until recently by tribal members in northeastern Oklahoma. No longer in daily use, it was in danger of extinction. Carolyn Quintero, a linguist raised in Osage County, worked with the last few fluent speakers of the language to preserve the sounds and textures of their complex speech. Compiled after painstaking work with these tribal elders, her Osage Dictionary is the definitive lexicon for that tongue, enhanced with thousands of phrases and sentences that illustrate fine points of usage.

Drawing on a collaboration with the late Robert Bristow, an amateur linguist who had compiled copious notes toward an Osage dictionary, Quintero interviewed more than a dozen Osage speakers to explore crucial aspects of their language. She has also integrated into the dictionary explications of relevant material from Francis La Flesche’s 1932 dictionary of Osage and from James Owen Dorsey’s nineteenth-century research.

The dictionary includes over three thousand main entries, each of which gives full grammatical information and notes variant pronunciations. The entries also provide English translations of copious examples of usage. The book’s introductory sections provide a description of syntax, morphology, and phonology. Employing a simple Siouan adaptation of the International Phonetic Alphabet, Quintero’s transcription of Osage sounds is more precise and accurate than that in any previous work on the language. An index provides Osage equivalents for more than five thousand English words and expressions, facilitating quick reference.

As the most comprehensive lexical record of the Osage language—the only one that will ever be possible, given the loss of fluent speakers—Quintero’s dictionary is indispensable not only for linguists but also for Osage students seeking to relearn their language. It is a living monument to the elegance and complexity of a language nearly lost to time and stands as a major contribution to the study of North American Indians.

Handsome comprehensive volume

Osage is an almost extinct member of the Siouan language family, cousin to the more well-known (and well-documented) Lakhota/Dakhota. Carolyn Quintero has performed a nearly superhuman feat of language salvage by incorporating the knowledge from the minds of the tribal elders into first an excellent grammar and now a handsomely produced dictionary. It makes a fine complement to LaFlesche's dictionary; while the latter often provides extended descriptions of objects or rituals, it has an inferior romanization system. May Ms. Quintero's labors serve to help revive this worthy tongue!

A good dictionary of Osage.

This is a very good dictionary of Osage, having both an Osage-English section (with example sentences), and an English-Osage section, and also a somewhat brief but still good grammar of the Osage language.

Great book about MIDI and all of its applications.

I teach music technology and recording at several colleges. I was introduced to this book by a colleague at a school I had just started working at. I actually ended up purchasing both the 2nd and 3rd editions, because I didn't realize I needed to teach out of the 3rd edition until after I had purchased the 2nd. So, this review is about my experience with the 3RD edition of the MIDI Manual.
I've found this book to be quite comprehensive. It not only explains MIDI and all of its applications, but it also touches on important DAW-related topics, such as computers and digital audio. I've taught these subjects for many years, but still found great enjoyment out of reading this book in preparation for my new classes. I'd not only recommend it for "MIDI" classes, but also for digital audio students as well.
My only complaint would be that there isn't much information about the history of MIDI. I'd like to see more information about the key players and how MIDI came to be. But, by far, I believe this is probably the best MIDI book on the market. I'd recommend it to students and teachers.

Words on the Vine

First I want to make clear that I believe one of the best tools for homeschooling moms trying to make curriculum decisions are the reviews on amazon. I bought this book based on the great reviews, but for once that was a mistake. A little over half of this book is truly a wonderful resource and to some, still worth the price. But for my children many of the pages were frustrating and when I could not make sense of the reasoning used to come up with the answers; I stopped and went through the book, crossing out pages that I felt were not worth the effort. Some seemed to be all over the place while others were very close in meaning.

Here are a couple of newspaper headlines for you to interpret..."Poisoned Pork Patties Paralyze Pushy Patrician" (possible ans. A bossy man of high birth found himself unable to move after eating a sausage bisquit at a resturant), "Peppy Painter Puts Panda Pattern in Paper Panties" (poss. ans. A new product idea has hit the market with a splash. Now kids can copy art right off their underwear). In a crossword puzzle (which my children love) they were to find the answers without knowing the order or number that they were answering; this would not have been so bad except for the fact that some had the same amount of letters so they spent much of their time erasing-very frustrating. On pg. 71 there is a cartoon of the back view of a voluptuous woman in a string bikini with a man's eyes coming out of his head while looking at her-the word that goes with this picture is "spectacle." This may not offend some, but I thought they could have used a more appropriate picture for a children's book.

I realize from the reviews that others actually loved it. I am simply giving you the experience I had with my children. I hope it will help you to make a better choice that will suit your family's needs. "English From the Roots Up" is a wonderful alternative to this book. It is very thorough and gives suggestions for teaching this subject along with a pronunciation guide. I also recommend the card game "Rummy Roots" a fun way to remember the root meanings.

While learning the Latin meaning of "miss", here are some example sentences:

p5. #8, "Dear Yinny, I hope you plan to be an obedient and -------------- wife." and the correct answer, you guessed it: "submissive"

p6. A. An elderly citizen smites a county commissioner with her pocketbook. Why?

p8. Student is given a black and white hand drawing and asked to come up with a story about the person named Mandy after being told she has a manicure....this doesn't make sense...are we trying to teach children to jump to conclusions about people without any facts?

We just started this book. I wasn't looking to teach social justice lessons during my spelling lessons. For that reason, I'd avoid it.

As Close as It Gets for Root Study

As a homeschool and highly qualified teacher, I have found Words on the Vine to be the most thorough supplementary resource to teach Greek and Latin roots. However, as with most teaching resources, I cannot use it in whole for my sixth graders. Some topics, including aliens, heavily written valentine cards, a mockery of Heaven's angel band, a twist to the Bible's story of Jonah, and a formal will written by the student, are all assignments we will not be using. To replace these assignments, my students will write the definitions of vocabulary words, write each vocabulary word in a sentence, or complete an original assignment prepared by the teacher. Additional Greek and Latin root words will also be studied by use of Scholastic's Vocabulary Packets.

Not my first pick, but may be good supplment for hikers.

After reading many reviews, I purchased this book, BACKCOUNTRY COOKING, and THE BACK-COUNTRY KITCHEN by Teresa Marrone. I can't help but compare the two books, so my opinion on this book is relative to my opinion of the other.

The introduction of BACKCOUNTRY COOKING categorizes camp chefs as Ascetics, Pragmatists or Gourmands. This book leans heavily toward the ascetic-pragmatist end of the scale. As the subtitle, FROM PACK TO PLATE IN 10 MINUTES, may suggest, the emphasis is on quickly-prepared meals. As a consequence, the meals tend to be simple. If you're someone for whom part of the challenge of the camp experience is to create fabulous multi-course meals in the wild, this book is not for you. And, as expected for a book from BACKPACKER magazine, the emphasis is on light packing and cooking with a single-burner stove.

The first part of the book discusses ingredients, tool and procedures as does Marrone's book, but I find the discussion in THE BACK-COUNTRY KITCHEN to be better and more complete, in particular, providing much more detail in home drying foods. BACKCOUNTRY COOKING discusses a plethora of grains, most of which I've never seen in a grocery store. (Different kinds of oats, different kinds of rice, bread bases, etc.) Baking methods are very briefly touched upon, but the book goes little beyond single-burner stove-top cooking.

Sidebars from different magazine contributors are interspersed throughout the book, and give good tips. Some black-and-white photos are also sprinkled throughout the book.

After the introduction, the book goes into the chapters containing the recipes, with each chapter representing a meal or course. One very nice thing is that each recipe includes nutritional information.

Now, I just have a so-so opinion of this book, and it was hard for me to establish why. Like I said, I found the introductory information to be better in the other book. But I think part of my indifference is due to the recipes. There seem to be a lot of ethnic foods - Oriental, Middle Eastern, Mexican. The desserts are mostly rice and bread puddings (yick), and include mincemeat (for dessert?!). Maybe you eat a lot of hummus, but I suspect many people will find that a lot of the recipes are not the kind of things you find at home, and perhaps the trail is not the best place to find out that your body has strange reactions to strange food. Furthermore, many of the ingredients, such as the grains and beans, are things I just don't see in the local supermarket. To the author's credit, they give a complete appendix of mail-order companies, but I'm not particularly excited about paying shipping to experiment with recipes.

Teresa Marrone's book, although including more multi-burner, multi-pot recipes for canoeists, car campers and others able to carry more gear, also has many single-burner lightweight recipes for hiking. It seemed to me that her book had more recipes that BACKCOUNTRY COOKING but, in fact, the number of recipes were similar. (BACKCOUNTRY COOKING has 144, and THE BACK-COUNTRY KITCHEN has 150.)

My recommendation is to start with Marrone's THE BACK-COUNTRY KITCHEN. If you feel the need for more single-burner meals, or more quickly-prepared meals, augment it with BACKCOUNTRY COOKING.

Finally a book for those that like to eat

This book is excellent. It may not have the largest number of recipes, but the ones it does have are well thought out, backpacker friendly, and just plain good. The book has a lot of variety too. Each recipe is organized into two parts, the pre-hike preparation (what to do at home) and then then a on-trail section. The authors have tried to simplify the on-trail requirements making meal time easier. The book emphasizes using standard ingrediants (no more expensive store bought freeze-dried stuff) and includes instructions for preserving (dehydrating) your own.

This book has a good amount (it's not War and Peace) of recipes that are tasty and easy for backpacking! Also a chapter or two of good advice concerning food in general...how to pack it, what kinds of things work, making your own dried foods, etc. Each meal has a chapter, like Breakfast, Lunch, whatever...there are no-cook things, all the way to fresh baked bread on the trail and pizza. Yum! (well no I haven't done the pizza or bread but I'm going to try it since they sound so good! And easy too)

The first of these was Nicolaus Copernicus’ De Revolutionibus Orbium Coelestium, Libri VI (Six books on the revolutions of the heavenly spheres). Published in 1543, the year of the Polish astronomer’s death, De Revolutionibus gave a revolutionary new blueprint for the planetary system. The earth, instead of resting solidly in the center of the cosmos, was set awhirl, spinning on its axis every twenty-four hours and revolving around a distant, fixed sun. The new cosmology was not a clarion call from the stars, inevitable and proven by fresh Renaissance observations of the planets; instead it was something truly subtle and wonderful, a "theory pleasing to the mind." Chapter 10, with its famous sun-centered diagram of the planetary system, was intended to convince not by physical or astronomical "proof," but by aesthetics, by the beauty of the explanation. Clearly the persuasion would be in the eye of the beholder.

Each of Copernicus’ arguments concerns the planets, those heavenly bodies that moved against the fixed patterns of the distant stars. He demonstrated that the principal complications in the planetary motions could be elegantly explained by attributing movement to the earth itself. From a geometric point of view, Copernicus’ arguments were highly compelling, but to the great majority of his contemporaries, any claims for physical reality seemed ridiculous. If the earth were spinning daily on its axis, a stone thrown upward would surely land in another county. As the great Danish astronomer Tycho Brahe would say later in the sixteenth century, "The Copernican arrangement nowhere offends the principles of mathematics, but it casts the earth, a lazy, sluggish body unfit for motion, into a movement as fast as the aetherial torches [i.e., the stars themselves]."

Copernicus's wonderful revolutions

Though some of his ideas or "philosophys" are extreemly out of date, it is a marvel to read the book that first experessed the "crazy" ideas that are now common knowledge for a 3rd Grader. I feel that anyone intent on studying philosophy, astronomy, mathamatics, or is just very intrested in the greatest works of all time should deffinitly read this book. Although sometimes hard to understand (Nicolaus is not the greatest writer) because of it's crypticness, it is a "must read."
