From Publishers Weekly
In these lyrical prose passages, Mexican American women of San Antonio, Tex., muse on their loyalty to Mexico, their lovers and their sense of self-worth. Author tour.

From Library Journal
In this collection of Mexican-American stories, Cisneros addresses the reader in a voice that is alternately buoyant, strong, funny, and sad. The brief vignettes of the opening piece, "My Lucy Friend Who Smells Like Corn," are tiles in a mosaic. Taken together, these vignettes give a vivid, colorful picture of life on the Texas/Mexico border. Family ties are strong: aunts, uncles, cousins, grandparents are all present. The stories are often about the romantic dreams of young girls longing to escape stifling small-town life who discover that things are not much different on the other side of the border. Cisneros has an acute eye for the telling detail that reveals the secrets and the dreams of her characters. She writes with humor and love about people she knows intimately.

Poetically written exploration of women's experiences
By studentofislamichistory
This is the book which made me a feminist during my undergraduate years, and on which I subsequently wrote my senior English thesis. No author of short stories can turn a phrase the way Cisneros can, and her poetic evocations of different stages of life from young girl to mature young woman shed a multi-faceted light on Hispanic women's experiences in which every paragraph becomes thought-provoking.
In addition, read as a whole thematically, this anthology can be seen as similar to the sort of artistic coming-of-age novels such as Hermann Hesse's Peter Camenzind. The key turning point in this development may be the story "Little Miracles, Kept Promises," which is a series of letters left at the shrine of La Virgin de Guadelupe. This reveals the many layers of the shrine, which is the site of an old Aztec goddess with whom Cisneros identified, and who allows for a new revelation of feminine power in the Mexican heritage which comes out for the rest of the work.
However you choose to read it, this is a collection which will both delight and challenge all who come prepared.

Failed: What the

Why has the Eurozone ended up with an unemployment rate more than twice that of the United States more than six years after the collapse of Lehman Brothers? Why did the vast majority of low- and middle-income countries suffer a prolonged economic slowdown in the last two decades of the 20th century? What was the role of the International Monetary Fund in these economic failures? Why was Latin America able to achieve substantial poverty reduction in the 21st century after more than two decades without any progress?

Failed analyzes these questions, explaining why these important economic developments of recent years have been widely misunderstood and in some cases almost completely ignored. First, in the Eurozone, Mark Weisbrot argues that the European authorities' political agenda, which included shrinking the welfare state, reducing health care, pension, and other social spending, and reducing the bargaining power of labor played a very important role in prolonging the Eurozone's financial crisis and pushing it into years of recession and mass unemployment. This conclusion is based not only on public statements of European officials, but also on thousands of pages of documentation from consultations between the IMF and European governments after 2008.

The second central theme of Failed is that there are always practical alternatives to prolonged economic failure. Drawing on the history of other financial crises, recessions, and recoveries, Weisbrot argues that regardless of initial conditions, there have been and remain economically feasible choices for governments of the Eurozone to greatly reduce unemployment-including the hardest hit, crisis-ridden country of Greece.

The long-term economic failure of developing countries, its social consequences, as well as the subsequent recovery in the first decade of the 21st century, constitute the third part of the book's narrative, one that has previously gotten too little attention. We see why the International Monetary Fund has lost influence in middle income countries. Failed also examines the economic causes and consequences of Latin America's "second independence" and rebound in the twenty-first century, as well as the challenges that lie ahead.

Review

"For those who wish to understand the global economy of the past generation, the shocking failures and impressive successes, this is the book to read. With careful scholarship and lucid analysis, Weisbrot reveals the pernicious effects of the neoliberal assault on the world's population, from wealthy and developed Europe to the global south, and exposes the dominant political-economic doctrines, rooted in a harsh attack on democracy and undermining of social policies that benefit the vast majority. He also shows how rejection of these doctrines has led to impressive achievements. All of this is consistent with actual economic history, if not prevailing illusion. The critique is harsh and incisive, but prospects are bright if the lessons of history and the logic of policy are viewed with care, as in this timely, authoritative, and very valuable study."

--Noam Chomsky, Institute Professor and Professor of Linguistics (Emeritus), MIT

"The International Monetary Fund, the European Central Bank, and neoliberal economics may have failed, but Mark Weisbrot has not. His demolition job on the economic policies that have led to misery for millions is comprehensive, long overdue and a resounding success."

--Larry Elliott, Economics Editor, The Guardian

"In five well-written chapters, Weisbrot presents a broad analysis of economic transformations and growth in the world over the last 35 years...Highly Recommended"

--lChoice

"If this prediction turns out to be true, it will be partly due to the excellent work that Mark Weisbrot has contributed over many years -- well reflected in these pages -- to show the dismal failures of these ideas and to help develop more just and inclusive economic paths for countries to follow."

--Gerald Epstein, Professor of Economics and Co-Director, Political Economy Research Institute (PERI), University of Massachusetts-Amherst

"Weisbrot's lFailed is a comprehensive lMarch of Folly cataloging the intellectual and policy failures of a set of extremely powerful institutions. Yet it is also written at a level accessible to any undergraduate with a basic economics background. I recommend it to those looking for a follow-up to the classic reporting on the 1997 Asian Financial Crisis and Argentine default"

--lH-Diplo

"As the author describes it in the introduction, this is a book about failed economic policies -- those of the Eurozone since 2008 and the failure of market reforms to reignite growth in low -- and middle-income countries in the last two decades of the twentieth century. But it is also a book about development successes -- and thus of alternatives to those failures -- notably that of China's state-led insertion into globalization, and Latin America with its several left-wing regimes over the past decade. It is a very important contribution to global debates by one of market (neoliberal) reforms' leading critics. It should be on the shelves of both defenders and critics of market reforms."

--Jos Antonio Ocampo, Professor at Columbia University and former UN Under-Secretary-General for Economic and Social Affairs

"There are two types of economic history books: those that start with an ideological position and select facts as they please, and another that actually discusses what happened and why. Mark Weisbrot's newest book belongs to the second category. It takes you on a journey to the places and crises that, according to the neoliberal narrative, should have never happened -- the Asian financial meltdown, the Argentine depression and recovery, the interminable European austerity -- and for good measure adds a discussion of the most successful economy of the last 40 years, China, which stands out among the rest with its pragmatic and unusual economic policy mix. There are here lessons to be learned for the rich, emerging, and poor economies alike."

--Branko Milanovic, Luxembourg Income Study Center and Graduate Center, City University of New York and author of The Haves and the Have-Nots: A Brief and Idiosyncratic History of Global Inequality

"Weisbrot's book shatters conventional wisdoms about the meaning of the Eurozone crisis. In clear, accessible language, it advances a desperately-needed alternative interpretation of the contemporary global economy."

--Sarah Babb, Professor of Sociology, Boston College

"Mark Weisbrot is among that very small group of economists whose theorizing about the world actually matches the truth of the world. His new book, Failed, is an indispensable analysis of prevailing misconceptions, of the type once described by the great sociologist C. Wright Mills as 'crackpot realism,' a delusional 'style of mind' that 'justifies its false and feeble views as reality itself.' It is required reading for anyone seeking to explain contemporary global politics."

--Greg Grandin, Professor of History, New York University

"Mark Weisbrot demolishes the illusions of Europe and the IMF -- but also shows, by way of contrast, how it was that Argentina, Brazil, Bolivia, and Ecuador have brewed success from rebellion against the neoliberal project."

--James K. Galbraith, author of The End of Normal: The Great Crisis and the Future of Growth and Lloyd M. Bentsen Jr. Chair in Government/Business Relations at University of Texas-Austin

Interesting
By Autamme_dot_com
The sub-title to this book is “what the ‘experts’ got wrong about the global economy” and seeing that immediately reminded one of a phrase that was popular when this reviewer was young: “expert: x is an unknown quantity and spurt is a drip under pressure.” In many ways, it is a rather apt description of the so-called experts, the masters of the universe, who are acting on our collective behalf.

The author seeks to look at why so many experts have failed to understand the global economy, coming out with bold (wrong) predictions or just plain misunderstanding things in recent years. Posing questions such as why did the Eurozone end up with an unemployment rate more than twice than that of the United States and six years after the collapse of Lehman Brothers and what caused the prolonged economic failure experienced by the majority of the world’s low- and middle-income countries at the end of the 20th century? It can’t all just be bad luck, one of those things, or something that is hard to explain… can it?

The author believes that there have been valid alternatives to economic failure and in most cases those wielding the crystal ball could have read the future better and certainly reacted a lot quicker with a higher degree of confidence and accuracy. Politics and adherence to political dogma comes in for much blame in this interesting, thought-provoking book, yet ignorance, bravado and a closed-mind are also symptoms that have inhabited a fair few who may have had a hand or more in the economic soup. In many cases not only did they burn the soup and make its flavour run out, but also they managed to upend the saucepan, destroy the kitchen and do serious damage to the house at the same time.

Mixing economic and political history, current day awareness, opinion and a few provocative fireworks into an interesting, compelling read, you don’t even need to understand it all or agree with it to enjoy the book. Yet you may find a great connection and a meeting of minds, along with rising blood pressure due to the activities and omissions of a few…

You may sense the author’s opinions and colours with ease! Punches are not being pulled, egos are not being massaged and neither is academic-neutral language being deployed. Text such as this is crystal clear: “Of all the examples of neoliberal policy failure since the Great Recession, the Eurozone crisis stands out as a work of art. The European authorities who made this mess – the European Commission, the European Central Bank and the International Monetary Fund – known as ‘The Troika’ – provide one of the clearest, large-scale demonstrations in modern times of the damage that can be done when people in high places get their basic macroeconomic policies wrong. That it has happened in a set of high-income economies with previously well-developed democratic institutions makes it even more compelling.” Ouch!

Should you believe that the author is presenting “a load of old cobblers” (translation: a technical term, often used to show you disagree with the fundamental argument) you can follow the sources for yourself and see whether the author has an argument you may hold with, or whether you are still of the belief that he must have been “smoking something” to come up with such a fantasy.

In any case, it was an interesting read. It gives you food for thought. Anything more than that is a bonus and it may depend on your own perceptions and potential willingness to accept a counterpoint. A worthy consideration to your reading list in any case!

Weisbrot gets it right
By Robert J. Trump
Essential, could very well become the definitive work on global economics post-2008 crisis. It may be somewhat unsurprising to conclude that the Eurozone's fiscal austerity was pro-cyclical and massively destructive to growth, but the volume of evidence here is overwhelming and uncontroversial. Less well-covered is the Latin American resistance to IMF dogma; with the Argentinian response leading the way, the coverage of South America here is indispensable. Particularly important to this reader is the sober, sympathetic reading of Venezuela's economic policies - Chavez and his resultant movement, both near-pariahs in econ-writer circles, are assessed intelligently and clearly. If you're interested in global economics, read this.

Thought-Provoking and Based on Reality Instead of Ideology
By Loyd Eskildson
This is a book about failed economic policies. Those bad policies are the result of incompetence and the malign influence of powerful special interests, and have ruined the lives of millions while slowing the global economy since 2010 - despite powerful trade unions and developed welfare states. In the U.S., those bad policies are forcefully implemented by a Congress now controlled by a climate change deniers, blockers of gun-control research, flat-taxers, and devotees of the ideology of Ayn Rand and selective pickings from long-deceased Adam Smith and David Ricardo. Thus, we continue with prescriptions for cutting public pension, healthcare, and other social expenditures, reducing public sector employment, increasing labor supply, reducing taxes (while also railing against deficits), and reducing employment protections that can be expected to redistributed income upward.

The author asserts that it is not only the late-comers like South Korea and China that have violated the 'creation myths' of modern economics en route to a developed economy - protection and state-sponsored development were essential to the success of almost all of today's high-income countries. The first was Britain, protecting its woolen industry with high tariffs from the 1720s onward, and making certain that its colonies (including America) would not compete with British industry. When America was freed from British domination, its first Treasury Secretary, Alexander Hamilton, became the world's leading protagonist of protecting 'infant industries,' advocating tariffs, subsidies, import bans, etc. Abraham Lincoln succeeded in raising U.S. tariffs to the highest in the world while the U.S. was the fastest-growing economy in the world (end of the Civil War to WWI). Northern industrial interests favored protectionism, while Southern slave-holders wanted free trade. The Americans, like the British before them, only supported 'free trade' when they could do so and still dominate the world economy. Yet, most of this history doesn't trickle down to today's students of economics, and thus there's little objection when recent and current events are reshaped to fit a fictional narrative.

The IMF, World Bank, and the World Trade Organization have formed an 'unholy trinity' and led a long, failed experiment in dozens of countries. After 20 years of nearly worldwide neoliberal reforms and economic failure, the one big country (China) that chose a sharply different economic path became the world's largest economy and helped pull dozens of others out of their long slump in its wake. In recent months, China has also pulled off an unprecedented diplomatic coup by getting America's closed allies, including the U.K., Germany, and France, to ignore Washington and join 40 countries in founding China's $100 billion Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank. It is clear that Washington will not succeed in remaking the planet in its own economic image.

The U.S. was the epicenter of the global 2008 'Great Recession' that lasted officially 18 months in the U.S. It was the worst U.S. recession since the Great Depression, and the U.S. recovery was nothing to brag about - only the vastly worse results in the Eurozone could make it look good. (By February 2014, the Eurozone was still close to record unemployment of 12% - compared with 6.7% in the U.S. In the harder hit countries like Greece and Spain, unemployment passed 27 and 26 percent, respectively, with youth unemployment at 58% and 53%.

Cooperation, Comity, and Competition PolicyFrom Oxford University Press

Cooperation, Comity, and Competition Policy, edited by Andrew T. Guzman, illustrates how domestic competition law policies intersect with the realities of international business. It offers a discussion of what might be done to improve the way in which cross-border business is handled by competition policy.

The first part of the book provides country reports written by local experts explaining the extraterritorial reach of national laws. Each country report summarizes existing domestic law and examines the conditions under which each country applies its substantive competition laws to conduct that takes place abroad. These chapters also address the question of comity, meaning the circumstances in which a country would decline to exercise jurisdiction on the grounds that another state is the more appropriate jurisdiction. Finally, the extent of cooperation between the local government and other states is examined. In conducting cross-border business activity, these reports provide the reader with a sense of the multiple jurisdictions that a business must consider within the scope of how laws from various states interact and overlap. The countries covered include: Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, the EC, Israel, Japan, Singapore and the United States.

The second part of the book offers several proposals for effectively managing these overlapping competition policy regimes. Written by top academics and practitioners, the proposals render some of the most important current thinking on the topic.

The country reports and the expert policy proposals together provide a unique perspective on international competition policy and the challenges of the international competition policy regime.

Cult classic and often referenced guide to the golden rule
By Gagewyn
If you got to this page then you are probably already one of the cult following of the legendary Painters Secret Geometry. I read this book in the form of an entire copy xeroxed form a library edition in the late 80s which I borrowed from another art fan. (Trust me I looked for it but it wasn't for sale anywhere) We both missed the reprint and aren't I kicking myself for it?

Basically Bouleau goes through many many master works of art and extracts the Golden mean from them. The placement of that figure, the way she is holding the vase in relation to her body - so many elements in the composition of these paintings coincide with mathematic placement its eerie. The concept of extracting Fibonacci numbers and finding geometrical patterns in art is nothing new, but here it is demonstrated over and over and much better than anecdotal evidence.

I have never understood why this book is so hard to get ahold of. It has been referenced over and over again since its original publication and was a big influence on art analysis.

Probably you already know this but this is a book you have to have if you are into art history. So the question is do you have the 350 dollars used copies are currently selling for? Trust me all library copies have been stolen by now so reprints or here are your only hope to unravel the painters secret geometry....

Any European Art History Course Without This Book is Not Worth Taking
By T. Campbell
Update, 4 August 2014.
It is impossible to overstate the importance of this book to the studies of art history and 2-D drawing and painting instruction. This book certifies beyond reasonable doubt that the "intuitions" of the great European masters and well trained artists into the 20th century incorporated a healthy dose of geometrical technique to organize their image spaces harmoniously. Organization did not dominate their images; organization was one of the components of how they conceived, evolved, and finished their works, along with their subjective sensibilities, which so many artists today claim to be sufficient. The lack of knowledge and understanding of images' structural organization is apparent in just about any art-crit or art history writings or lectures, whether it is Max Kozloff, Meyer Shapiro, or any other of the multitude of such "experts." And if they know such material, why do they fail to communicate it as part of their discussions and analyses?

Before going into further detail than in the original review, let me make a comment about the Dover reprint. At the retail price of $21.95, this is nothing less than a steal. It is a near facsimile of the hardback edition by Harcourt from 1963. The same size, the primary difference is the lower contrast of the illustrations on Dover's relatively uncoated paper. But there is nothing less useable about this printing than the original.

Bouleau starts with a look at the precursors to easel paintings, what he calls monumental art, done on the surfaces of any number of shapes and surface geometries of churches, palatial homes, public buildings, etc, primarily in Italy. Practitioners had to have been masters of applied geometry to have gotten right to the observer's eye the distortions necessary for convincing renderings. He then considers the constraints a frame imposes on the emergent image's or sculpture's content and form. In this chapter he introduces and analyzes several historically important constructions, including the armature of the rectangle and rabatment of the shorter sides of a rectangle, two of the most commonly used structures and their variations over several centuries to the present.

The other chapters are arranged at times chronologically and others by the technique within the chronology. Starting with the geometric structures used during the Middle Ages, he progresses to the musical consonances, to the curvilinear and linear types of dynamic compositions, applications to depth rendering, and on to 19th and 20th century artists and their work.

Let's consider just three from among hundreds of examples of why a knowledge of structure and ability to perceive it in an image deepen one's understanding of an image and of the artist's possible intent. Bouleau spends a lot of space on Seurat, culminating in an analysis of "La Grande Jatte," at the Art Institute of Chicago, publisher of the outstandingly detailed book, "Seurat and the Making of La Grande Jatte." Conservators found tack holes around the frame of a 6 x 4 grid; the aspect ration of the painting is 2 x 3. While the book goes into detail about how Seurat might have used the grid for this and that, it does not at all consider the other organizational potentials of a grid. Bouleau makes an insurmountable case that Seurat used not only grids, but far far more sophisticated geometrical ways to organize his images than simple grids of squares might lead one to imagine.

My second example is Meyer Shapiro's "analysis" of Mondrian's work in his essay, "Mondrian" in his book of selected papers, "Modern Art" compared to Bouleau's revelations about how Mondrian actually structures "Painting I," "Broadway Boogie-Woogie," and "Composition with Two Lines.' The former tries, with probably good reason, to tie these works to 19th Century and other artists' earlier works for inspiration and even organizational hints, but one's appreciation of the geometry of these works is completely unfulfilling. It takes Bouleau's insights to grasp the depth of the genius behind these images.

For a third example, there is Botticelli's "Birth of Venus," her lean giving a viewer much about which to wonder, a pose that would tip a coracle, let alone a half-shell. Some play with L B Alberti's reverse musical consonances supplies the likely answer.

And so many more over more than six hundred years of productive genius. These ideas and analyses Bouleau did not pull from the ethosphere. All of these geometrical ideas are documented by artists about their own working methods and by such as Da Vinci, L B Alberti, G P Lomazzo, and numerous others, whose writings have been used by generations of artists, sometimes over hundreds of years. Other documentation includes artists' known studies and sketches and examinations of the finished works. More emerges constantly with new technologies and studies of works, such as on the Seurat painting.

Obviously, my point here is that without a detailed understanding and grounding in artists' various structural techniques, one lacks a major part of being able to make, view, understand, and appreciate images. This book should and could serve as a basis in every college's and art school's programs for at least a one semester course on these topics. Homework is so easy to conceive it doesn't bear mentioning. Another project of worth for this and all other art books of merit would be to build DVDs of the black-and-white illustrations, but in color. Such a DVD accompanying Bouleau's book might show not only color renderings of his findings, but also suggest other images for readers to solve on their own. This book's material could also serve as the core of a joint undergraduate Arts department - Math department course for arts students and math nonmajors that could be lots of fun.

Any person involved in the 2-D visual arts should get this book and digest its lessons. Even photographers, for whom direct applications of these techniques are not always immediately clear, will benefit from inculcating these methods into their own mental image databases to assist their eye in recognizing new possibilities to exploit in the studio or when moving quickly on the street with small format cameras. For anyone, knowing this material cannot fail to add a rich new dimension to one's viewing and enjoyment of the 2-D visual arts.

Interestingly, the preeminent geometric technique currently touted among photographers and, even, painters, the infamous Rule of Thirds, does not appear anywhere in this book. Thus far, I have not seen anything anywhere that hints at the origin of this "rule." I have some speculative ideas, but that is it.

Original Review, 23 March 2008:
This is the art history text we all should have had and didn't. It is the only book I have found in several years of looking into what has been printed on composition/design in the 2-D arts that actually shows the manner in which artists in a number of Greco-Roman to western traditions managed their space. It was certainly not the "I'm OK, you're OK" approach that is so common now. The great ones then, and to a certain degree even now, were very well educated in their traditions, which included mathematics, especially geometry, the application of which to image making was connected to their faith, as well as being an expression of their genius.

Bouleau's argument, in fact, does not find the "Golden Section" as the sole structural basis for space management over the centuries, but is one tool among many techniques that yielded harmonious spacial divisions that became the abstract structure of images. Though a structure might be geometric, complex or simple, artists found infinite variety in the possibilities, not infrequently of similar structures, over many centuries, styles, fashions, and traditions.

Bouleau carries his argument into the 20th century and shows that respect for geometric spacial division to establish harmony is not dead. It still works, even with completely nonrepresentational art.

This is a stunningly informative look at the visual arts in the European traditions and is the only book I have found that informs me on how the "old masters" and some contemporary masters built their paintings. Geometry was part of their art, and they KNEW their geometry. How many arts majors today are skilled in mathematics through algebra III and geometry? All too often, majoring in the arts is a code word for not doing well in the maths or disliking quantitative studies to the point of finding a major that doesn't require classes in the maths. Interestingly, one of Bouleau's geometric techniques involves ratios derived from the musical arts. Today, even, many commentators will acknowledge that musicians tend to be stronger than average in the maths. When has any reader heard such an asserion about practioners, historians, or critics of the visual arts?

It is probably a stretch to be able to apply much of this to photographing, my pet passion. What Bouleau reveals here requires deliberative time, not the quick visual assessments necessary in small format photography. But this reviewer asserts that the more a photographer knows about image structure, the more sure he or she is likely to be in using the viewfinder when the time comes.

This is an outstanding book that never should have been taken out of print. That it is says much to me about what is not taught to today's image makers, either drawing/painting, or photography.

Reads Like a DryTextbook - But Very Informative and Useful
By Talvi
Although written in 1964, this is a very thorough and well referenced/researched analysis of (mostly) pre-renaissance era paintings and the often geometric basis of those compositions. As with cubism, pre-raphaelite, even ancient Egyptian art: each era has its own style and influences and this book describes the core of middle ages period art. The book goes into detail of many paintings and statues to dissect and understand the placement of people, objects, and backgrounds in the composition. As a photographer, I found this book incredibly useful for inspiration and understanding of deeper compositional options I can use within my own art.

Chapters in the book include: Monumental art, The frame, Geometrical compositions in the Middle Ages, Musical consonances, Geometry after the middle ages, Dynamic compositions, Compositions in space, Picture framework in the nineteenth century, and Solutions of the problem in contemporary painting.

As can be seen from the above, author Bouleau compares and contrasts many different periods of art in order to put the art of the middle ages into context. From the musical note placement of friezes in ancient Greece to Renaissance era framing, there is so much to learn about composition and placement. Although many have noted that this is a great reference for learning the golden mean, I actually found so much more to digest. The complexity of some of the paintings, like using perspective sloping architecture or tall trees in order to create endless triangles and squares within triangles and squares was very elucidating.

If I was a painter, this would be open daily for inspiration and to push me to create the most purposeful and sophisticated images possible. As a photographer, I reread the examples every few months ago to refresh and inspire.

Since this is an old text, the images are in black and white and the writing is, indeed, very academic and dry. Be prepared for an old fashioned textbook feel. It's a shame it hasn't been rewritten or updated by a more modern author to take adventure of 21st century publishing. But still, for those serious about their work, this is a must-have reference.

Review
...with its odd mixture of terrifying witches and slapstick comedy, this tale [in Book One] is typical of much of the Metamorphoses... Book One sets out several key thematic elements that can be followed throughout the story: the danger of curiositas, the changeability of fortune, and the connection between magic and sensual pleasure. --Stephen Nimis, from the Foreword

Those who feel that Apuleius would make a good addition to their lineup will want to look carefully at James S. Ruebel's new edition of the first book of the Metamorphoses.

...there is no doubt that Ruebel makes the text far more accessible than the scholarly commentaries or that many of his notes are right on target.

...the introductory materials in this textbook are excellent; the text is spotless; the commentary has good and bad points, but the high points are higher than the low points are low, and the latter are remediable; the bibliography is all that one could ask...

...this edition is better than many others that are used in classrooms... --Stephen M. Trzaskoma, University of New Hampshire, Bryn Mawr Classical Review, Sept. 4, 2001

Response to Bob, above
By Ellen Finkelpearl
This edition is clearly designed for those who have studied Latin and is to be used in the classroom. Your points are fine, but miss the nature of the book. As a Latin teacher, I am very grateful that there is no translation because students don't translate carefully enough if there is a translation in front of them. The word "dimoto" is, in fact, in the vocabulary, but you have to know that it's the past participle of dimoveo, so you have to know some Latin. I suggest you get Hanson's Loeb edition which has the Latin and English side by side, which would work better for your purposes.
Sorry if this comment isn't useful to anyone else.

Provides Latin text, notes and vocabulary
By Midwest Book Review
Schools at the advanced high school to college grade levels which still have curriculums of Latin studies will welcome this annotated edition of Apeleius' novel classic. Apuleius: Metamorphoses Book 1 can be used in combination with other readings and provides Latin text, notes and vocabulary perfect for undergraduates.

User-friendly Apuleius
By D. Tafe
Ruebel has created a most useful edition of Metamorphoses Book I. His vocabulary and notes offer even a high school Latin student the ability to read Apuleius in the original without hesitation or apprehension. Stephen Nimis offers an intelligent and readable introduction to Apuleius' world and to the literary tradition which underlies Apuleius' Metamorphoses. A great tool to introduce this fascinating work to students who otherwise would have little or no experience of Silver Latin.
