Virtual Life

Like others in Pearson's trilogy on Life, this is a hard book to get through, but very rewarding. This volume is on Bergson and Deleuze, and is not for the novice. The reader should have read some Bergson and Deleuze, and more or less "got the idea" behind their projects. Pearson's book is broken up into a series of essays, but they are cunningly dovetailed together. It took me awhile to get the rhythm of his exposition down, but after that it was simply hard going, and not willfully obscure. The only chapter I was unable to get through was the final chapter on the being of memory -- at this point, either my brain or Pearson's usual clarity became exhausted. The earlier chapters, however, are very valuable expositions of Bergsonian thought.

Delivery condition

I have almost completed the reading of Volume I, and the arrival of this volume is good news. Volume I has been extraordinary. Like A History of Civilizations by Braudel, this book goes well beyond most historical writings.

As to the physical copy delivered, it was in pretty good shape, but with some stains, making me doubt the "NEW" description on the website.

The book is VERY informative and very easy to read and provides very good examples

I bought this book brand new due to the fact that I was taking the author's DSP class. The book is VERY informative and very easy to read and provides very good examples. The only issue I had with this book is that the binding started to break down after a couple weeks of use. Other than the book binding, I cannot recommend this book highly enough!

Jacques S. Gansler is the author of the influential books The Defense Industry, Affording Defense, and Defense Conversion: Transforming the Arsenal of Democracy, all published by the MIT Press. He is currently Professor and Roger C. Lipitz Chair in Public Policy and Private Enterprise in the School of Public Policy and Director of the Sloan Center Biotechnology Industry Center at the University of Maryland. He was Under Secretary of Defense for Acquisition, Technology, and Logistics from 1997 to 2001.

Thought provoking work.

Gansler's work is a sobering call to civilian and defense leaders about the mounting challenges facing the US defense industry. With the current debate over sequestration, his analysis and call to action are even more timely. While this book is certainly not a quick ready, it will reward the persistent reader with a substantive view of the problems and the possible solutions facing today's defense industry. My review of the work in the Sept/Oct edition of Military Review provides a more detailed review of this valuable work.
