Magical mind rules

As a therapist for over 25 years, I have read practically everything written on how to improve the quality of human life. Therefore, I was amazed when I read John Zulli's Mind Rules. His message is the most powerful, and the most accessible condensation of information on how to live a quality life that I have ever encountered. Most importantly, I was never bored! The stories, the humor, the snappy articulation of your mind's most basic functions makes The Mind Rules the one and only book I need by my bedside...whether I want comfort, direction, or a laugh, I can find it here.

Daylight, moonlight, twilight...aim for "The Zone"

My first thought as I reached for this book was, as you might expect, "...oh, another one of THESE books..." But, to say I've been pleasantly surprised is an understatement. Zulli's book is filled with interesting people and real life situations which he uses to maximum effect to illustrate his belief that we are underutilizing one of God's great gifts to us: our minds. Step by step, in a concise and stimulating style, Zulli led me through a series of exercises which have helped me to gain a more consistent mental toughness and focus. I have used his exercises to help me overcome some sleep problems, bring me some peace in an often frustrating work environment and, perhaps most importantly,used some of Zulli's 'Mind Rules'to improve my surfing. I want to say I also enjoy the layout of the book. Its short, right to the point essays, which form the chapters, constantly invite me to just pick up the book to any old page and read--I KNOW there'll be something useful or provocative. If you're looking for "The Zone", and you know, we all are, this book, at the very least, can help. At the most--it can INSPIRE!

Best book written for the public about how your mind works

I am an Author, hypnotherapist, speaker, trainer and stage performer (comedy hypnosis) who performs well over 200 shows a year. When I began to study hypnotherapy many years ago, I wish I could have known about this book from the very beginning. More than that, I wish back then I would have had the opportunity to learn from John Zulli. I found this book 5 years ago and have read it cover to cover. Books like this are usually too dense for the average reader to comprehend. I love this book because while it it dense, it is very consumer friendly, giving the reader the opportunity to really learn something valuable they may not find anywhere but laboring through a boring textbook.
If you want to understand yourself through the power of changing your mind and waking up from the state of trance you have been walking around in, to a better and more positive and successful way of thinking in your business, life and relationships, then read this book as soon as possible.

Don't waste your time

Very basic book. The bottom left corner of the cover states "video education included". Since no DVD comes with the book I emailed the publisher to see how to access the videos (?online). I never received a response. Like many trading books, this book has an impressive title, an inflated price and little value.

Effective Leadership Techniques

This is the book that started it all for Dr. John Kotter. It's still a classic.

When Dr. Kotter set out to study general managers there was at least one thing he was pretty sure he'd find. He was sure they'd be great time managers. After all, that was the great management effectiveness builder of the age.

Back then, time management was supposed to involve the careful auditing and controlling of time use. Good time managers were expected to carefully plan their days and then rigorously work their plan. But what Kotter discovered was something very different.

He discovered that effective general managers seemed more flexible than their peers. They were constantly engaging in ad-hoc, hallway meetings and using those occasions to covey their important messages.

What Kotter had stumbled upon was less a variation in good time management practice than it was an effective communications strategy. Senior managers, indeed, any managers, can only effectively communicate a few important things in the time available.

Kotters general managers knew this. So they made sure they knew what the most important messages were that they needed to get across.

They also understood that their important messages needed to be simple and repeated over and over again. They learned to seize whatever opportunities presented themselves and use them to share their key message.

Time management has come a long way since this book was written. Just compare any time management book from the 70s with David Allen's "The Art of Getting Things Done."

Communications channels have changed as well. Now there is voicemail and email. There are wireless phones, Wi-Fi hotspots, and email-enabled pagers.

If the general managers that Kotter studied were dropped into today's world, I'm sure they would face Rip-van-Winkle-like adjustments. They'd have to learn a lot about technology.

But they'd still understand that basics of good supervision, management and leadership. That's what this book is about and why it's worth reading.

An excellent field guide to general management!

GENERAL MANAGERS IN ACTION: POLICIES & STRATEGIES
by Francis Aguilar (FA)

While re-sorting/re-organising my personal library recently, these two books happened to pop out right in front of me. I had owned & read them during the mid-eighties when I had just been promoted to General Manager. In fact, they were my constant companions - field guides to be exact - during the nine years when I had held this position with three different firms across three different industries (chemicals manufacturing in Thailand, software development in Singapore, & metals trading in Singapore with manufacturing interests in Indonesia).
Both authors were known to me as I had read John Kotter (JK)'s 'Power & Influence: Beyond Formal Authority' & Francis Aguilar (FA)'s 'Scanning the Business Environment' in earlier years.

While JK's book was more specific in terms of the vital tasks & responsibilities of a GM, particularly from a typical American landscape, FA's book was more broad-based & intellectually more stimulating with an added international flavour. Nevertheless, both books were very well-written & easy to read. Both my own copies were earlier or first editions. I am gratified to know that newer editions of both books are now available from amazon website.

JK's book was based on the author's first-hand observations of fifteen top GMs from nine major companies. He described a typical day in the life of a successful GM. On the basis of his research into the daily behavior of GMs, he identified a dozen of typical patterns, discussed their implications & concluded that it was hard to fit the GM's behavior into categories like planning, organizing, controlling, directing, or staffing.

He argued that, in order to understand the general managers' behavior it is fundamental to recognize the two fundamental challenges & dilemmas in their jobs:

1) Figuring out what to do in the light of uncertainty & information anxiety;
2) Getting things done through a diverse group of people in spite of having little control over them;

Accordingly, GMs used agenda setting & network building to tackle these two challenges. The author further discussed both these tools in detail. He also explained how GMs use their entire networking relationships to implement their agendas.

With the author's fascinating portrait of the day-to-day activities of top GMs, I was really glad that I was able to piece together some workable composite ideas for my own career accomplishments.

There was, however, only one intriguing point from JK's book. He persuasively argued that the best manager was actually a specialist who had spent most of his career in one industry, learning its intricacies & establishing cooperative working relationships.

Content-wise, it had eighteen classic case studies from a variety of international businesses that illuminate the major decisions of business life & the strategies for dealing with specific situations. The author also painstakingly discussed the critical issues faced by most GMs.

From this book, I had obtained very clear perspectives on the complex issues of strategic management. The chapter on 'Formulating Strategy', in which the author touched on managing the quality of strategic thinking, was my favourite.

Interoperability between healthcare computer systems depends on the development, implementation and deployment of appropriate standards working together as a tightly specified language.

The five new chapters on Fast Health Interoperability Resources (FHIR) and its implementation in Principles of Health Interoperability: SNOMED CT, HL7 and FHIR, Third Edition cover the most important new healthcare interoperability standard for a generation. FHIR combines the best features of HL7 v2, v3 and CDA, and leverages the latest web standards. In addition, the authors discuss the core principles of healthcare interoperability, SNOMED CT and�clinical terminology, HL7 and interchange formats.

About the Author

Tim Benson graduated from the University of Nottingham as a mechanical engineer. He was introduced to healthcare computing at the Charing Cross Hospital, London, where he evaluated the socio-economic benefits of medical computing systems. He founded one of the first GP computer suppliers (Abies Informatics Ltd). There, with James Read and David Markwell, he helped develop the Read Codes, which became the national standard for NHS primary care and one of the two sources of SNOMED CT.� Tim led the first European project team on open standards for health interoperability, which led to CEN/TC251 and collaboration with HL7, where he was a co-chair of the Education Committee for several years.� He has also developed a family of short generic patient-reported outcome measures with R-Outcomes Ltd (http://www.r-outcomes.com).

Grahame Grieve graduated from the University of Auckland as a biochemist, and worked as a clinical diagnostic scientist at St Vincent’s Hospital, Melbourne, before spending four years performing medical research in Diabetes, Lipid Metabolism, and Oxidation. He then switched focus, and joined Kestral Computing P/L, a Laboratory and Imaging Information Systems vendor, where he ended up as Chief Technology Officer, before leaving to establish his own consulting business, Health Intersections Ltd (http://www.healthintersections.com.au). A growing involvement in integration, and interoperability, lead him to the HL7 community where he has led committees and edited standards for HL7 v2, v3 and CDA. The outcome of this was the recognition that something new was needed, and this led to the creation of the FHIR specification, which now consumes his life.

This is third edition of Tim Benson's now standard text on healthcare interoperability. It does focus on the specific technologies listed in the title, but it's more than just a handbook. Instead, it begins with a careful discussion of interoperability, and why building interoperable solutions in the healthcare domain has proven so difficult. The analysis is insightful, and well worth reading for any healthcare professional, informatics, or developer. The book offers no magic bullets, but understanding the nature of the problem is key developing solutions.

In the second part of the book, Benson moves on to a surprisingly detailed discussion of SNOMED CT, first considering its history and guiding principles, and then delving into the details. It may seem odd that the title of the book only mentions SNOMED. Why not ICD-10, LOINC, or any of the other vocabularies that play such a basic role in EHR systems today? In fact, Benson does discuss ICD_10, LOINC and UMLS. But SNOMED CT is presented as an example of how a vocabulary (really, an ontology) ought to be designed, and is compared in some detail with position dependent coding schemes. In my opinion, this was useful as practical example of the theory discussed in the first part of the book. But it also made me think about software design.

The remaining sections of the book focus on HL7, XDS, and FHIR. Unfortunately, the treatment of HL7v2 was brief, almost too brief. But that's also inevitable. It's simply not possible for a book such as this one to cover the protocol in detail. Instead, the book covers enough detail to understand the essentials of message structure, encoding, and the event model. Examples include patient identification (PID) and visit (PV1) But the main focus here is providing a reference point.

The next chapters consider HL7 V3, including the Clinical Document Architecture (CDA) and information model (RIM) . The coverage of HL7 V3 was more detailed than I expected, including a discussion of constrained models and the dynamic model. But again, much of the focus was on what has proved successful in HL7 V3, what has not, and why. In this part of the book, as elsewhere, there is a focus on common themes, and we are able to see how different technologies are used to address the same problems.

At this point, I'll skip over the section on XDS and move on to FHIR. This shouldn't be taken as a criticism of the chapter on IHE XDS. Rather, I feel less qualified to comment here (and this review is already getting a bit long!)

The final part of the book, co-authored with Grahams Grieve, the creator of FHIR, presents Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources (pronounced "fire") This is a technology based on the principles of REST and agile computing, and which incorporates many of the best ideas of earlier generations of HL7. This book does a good job of presenting the main ideas from scratch, and does not fall prey to th e temptation to leave out important topics such as extensions, conformance and profiles, and implementing FHIR. Of course, there is much about the details of the specification that is not covered, but the book does a good job of presenting the core principles and underlying concepts.

In the end, we see enough of these technologies to understand how they can be used to address problems of interoperability, and that is the point.

About the Author
Charles A. Lewis was graduated from the University of Maryland, received his MS from Cornell University and has worked as a plant breeder, garden center operator, and director of the former Sterling Forest Gardens in Tuxedo, New York. He was Horticulturist, Administrator of Collections, and Research Fellow at the Morton Arboretun in Lisle, Illinois. His work in people/plant interactions has been honored by such organizations as the American Horticulture Society, American Horticultural Therapy Association, U.S. Department of Agriculture, Swarthmore College, American Association of Botanical Garden and Arboreta, New York City Housing Authority, Chicago housing Authority and the People Plant Council. He now lives in Albuquerque, New Mexico and consults on people/plant interactions. He has published widely in professional journals and popular magazines and newspapers.

social work and gardening

Interesting story but my expectations were higher, I was somehow expecting to read more of a scientific study,
it is a nice and easy read of one person's life journey through social work with gardening as a tool to heal, unite people & communities.
From that aspect, social work and gardening, it is a success story I must admit.

A Gardener's Must Read!

Charles Lewis is the undisputed champion of people-plant relationships. A learned man, well-versed in all aspects of horticulture, Lewis is also an excellent writer. Lewis asks: "In what ways do plants enter our mental and spiritual lives?" What exactly is the importance of cultivating our own "inner garden." Gardens grow persons, not just plants. Lewis found that to pursue his interest in the human side of horticulture he had to look to other disciplines - psychology, sociology, geography, and medicine. Charles Lewis's Green Nature/ Human Nature is a must read for anyone who loves to garden. "Horticultural Therapy for the Soul" perhaps describes this book, but actually it is more. Check out this rare gem--you'll love it. Tom Ogren, author of Allergy-Free Gardening, Ten Speed Press.

Valuable resource

This book is filled with valuable information about our relationship with nature--and, therefore, ourselves at a very deep level. I find it an incredible resource, citing research on community gardens, horticultural therapy, the deep and enduring relationship between people and plants. Gardeners, environmentalists, and anyone who loves plants will find reinforcement, information, and inspiration in these pages.
