Great Case Studies

I'm currently in school for respiratory care and was looking for a book with good case studies on ABG's. The way this book is laid out is great. Each chapter has 2 case studies and then the last chapter is all case studies. Each case study aims to teach you something a little different to look out for in the clinical setting and the blood gases almost always relates to the rest of the chapter.

It's also an incredibly easy read. I'm not a big fan of just reading through a text book. In fact for most of my classes I never open my books, but I have found myself reading entire chapters and enjoying it.

This book wasn't required nor recommended for any of my classes, I just purchased it for my own benefit. That being said, I think this book is really beneficial for anyone looking to improve there critical thinking skills when it comes to blood gases.

About the Author
Kris Lane received his B.A. in History and Latin American Studies from the University of Colorado, Boulder, in 1991, and his Ph.D in History from the University of Minnesota in 1996. Lane specializes in Colonial Latin American history, focusing mostly on mining in the Andes Mountains of South America. Lane's books include PILLAGING THE EMPIRE: PIRACY IN THE AMERICAS, 1500-1750 (1998) and QUITO, 1599: CITY & COLONY IN TRANSITION (2002). He also edited Bernardo de Vargas MACHUCA'S INDIAN MILITIA AND DESCRIPTION OF THE INDIES (2008) and DEFENSE OF THE WESTERN CONQUESTS (2009). Lane has also published articles on piracy, slavery, gold mining, headhunting, and witchcraft in colonial Ecuador and Colombia. His new book, COLOR OF PARADISE: COLOMBIAN EMERALDS IN THE AGE OF GUNPOWDER EMPIRES, is due out in 2010.

Matthew Restall is the Edwin Erle Sparks Professor of Colonial Latin American History, Anthropology and Women's Studies at Penn State University at University Park. He is also the co-director of "LiLACS" and Director of Latin American Studies, a member of the Committee for Early Modern Studies, the editor of "Ethnohistory Journal", and the series editor for "Latin American Originals". Restall's area of specialization resides in colonial Yucatan, Mexico, Maya history, the Spanish Conquest, and Africans in Spanish America. During the 1990s, his research focused on studying the Mayas of Yucatan through sources written in the Yucatec Maya language between the sixteenth and nineteenth centuries--this work culminated in THE MAYA WORLD (1997) and MAYA CONQUISTADOR (1998). His research on the Conquest has been published as SEVEN MYTHS OF THE SPANISH CONQUEST (2003), and Invading Guatemala (2007). More recently, he received NEH and Guggenheim fellowships to study people of African descent in Mexico and Yucatan, and his book, THE BLACK MIDDLE: AFRICANS, MAYAS, AND SPANIARDS IN COLONIAL YUCATAN published in June of 2009.

Being a sports medicine physician, I'm well aware of the needs to integrate quality therapy with proper musculoskeletal diagnosis. This book meets at that intersection and serves as the perfect adjunct in my practice to help me better understand the therapeutic regimen I need to request. Feedback from one of my partner therapists suggest they appreciate the flip side of it considering the diagnostic descriptors help them better understand the "medical view".

As a person who works in the sports medicine field I find that this book helps with being able to return athletes back to the game after enduring traumatic injuries that result in surgery. His approach is great and knowing the positive relationship between post surgical rehab and recovery is where Giangarra nails it on the head. Fantastic read!

About the Author
CHARLES M. SCHWAB (1862-1939) joined Carnegie Steel in 1879 and became president when he was 35, working closely with Andrew Carnegie.

He sold the company to J.P. Morgan, and became president of Morgan's new corporation, U.S. Steel. Schwab later ran Bethlehem Steel, a company known for its efficiency and competitiveness.

During World War I, Schwab became Director-General of the Emergency Fleet Corporation for the U.S. government.

Oh, What Could [Should] Have Been

"Succeeding With What You Have" by Charles M. Schwab does have some inspirational value for the two hours it will take to read it. However, in a broader sense, it is a distinct disappointment that one of America's foremost industrialists of the early 20th Century should not have left us with more insight as to his legendary "people skills." Quoted several times in Dale Carnegie's "How to Win Friends and Influence People," one would expect a lot more depth and insight than these 62 short pages. Though a checklist item for both the tenderfoot and advanced student of leadership.

This was the "GO TO" Man!

This book is incredible! Charles Schwab use to make $75,000.00 a year when most people were happy to make $1200.00 yearly. He also received on many occasions a $1 Million bonus because he new how to manage people so well. Anything he has to say is well worth reading!
