What People Are Saying-

"A very solid written book with descriptions that allow you to perfectly see the scene in the writer's mind and feel the emotions of the characters as they move through their story. The characters were believable along with even the paranormal aspects. The plot was deep enough to very much satisfy my mind and kept me guessing as to exactly how it would end."
- Stacy Eaton, Author of International Best Selling "My Blood Runs Blue" Series

"It was fantastic, and I'm looking forward to reading future books Brown writes in the series. Having a congenital heart defect myself, I definitely identified with Ana, and everything she was going through with her heart problem. Brown definitely has a good sense of what adolescents facing such problems must go through on a daily basis."
- Andrea Buginsky, Author of The Chosen

"Fledgling is a very well rounded story bringing contemporary issues to the paranormal table. It had me reading for hours with its wonderful characters and enchanting world-building. This is on my 'to read often' pile and have done so at least three times!"

Book Description:

Set apart from other eighteen year olds, Ana Hughes knows she is different. A life threatening heart condition smothers her future and she yearns to feel normal. Her hopes are pinned on a fresh start in a remote town far from her native Colorado. Among the locker filled hallways in Clark Bend High, Ana keeps to the shadows, not wanting to draw attention to her violet tinged lips and wilted silhouette. And she almost succeeds, until she meets Chance Morgan.

Struggling to keep up appearances, she soon suspects Chance is hiding something as well. His animal-like senses, miraculous healing ability and peculiar reaction to her Thunderbird necklace compels Ana to question if there’s more to the stories about his Navajo ancestry. Without any other explanation, she fears he is playing tricks on her. But the truth may prove too much for Ana’s delicate heart…

Excerpt from FLEDGLING:

"Ana continued fading in and out of awareness. Relinquishing to the nothingness that engulfed her, she had the impression of movement. She heard heavy breathing, which she determined wasn’t coming from her, sounding more like snorting. She sensed herself hanging, her body limp, unwilling to forfeit control back to her wandering mind. As though she was observing everything from a distance, it felt like she was at the end of a darkened hallway, being pulled back into a hollow chasm. Inky fingers entwined her mind until there was nothing left."

In My Humble Opinion, the first book in one of my favorite series
By Victoria Trout
My thirteen year old daughter wanted to write a review for this book. Since she doesn't have an account, I told her we would post it using my account. Here is Stephanie's review:

My favorite part of this book is how family is a big deal! Not only that, but your ability to combine magic and real life blew my mind! I have had such an amazing time reading it. Also I loved how that you put a clue into the title. There wasn’t anything I disliked about the whole book. I loved it! And it was the first time in a long time I couldn’t put the book down. I would stay up really late and I’m talking about 2 to 3 in the morning reading it. Well done! I can’t wait to read the second book.

Fledgling (The Shapeshifter Chronicles #1) - Natasha Brown
By Amazon Customer
I'm going to start this review with my biggest problem with this book. If you have a serious, life-threatening medical condition...DO NOT KEEP IT A SECRET. There are so many parts in this book where I wanted to bludgeon Ana for being reckless and not saying anything about how she can't do anything to elevate her heart rate. I understand her wanting to be "normal", but when "normal" can get you killed...it's just an incredibly stupid choice to make, and it frustrates me to no end when characters do something like that.

But, maybe that's just me.

I wasn't overly impressed with the romance. It's sweet that Chance cares about Ana so much, and it was heartwarming that after she FINALLY told him something about her condition, he stepped up to take care of her rather than running away. But did it really need the "this is fate" element thrown in? Couldn't he just love her without all of those magical touch sparks, and the necklace? (The book gets brownie points for not throwing in an unneeded love triangle to try and create suspense, at least.)

The villain was also incredibly stereotypical. Greasy hair and acne...really? The idea of the villain in general though, the thought of there being those who would steal power instead of working towards it, was interesting.

Aside from the romantic one, I enjoyed the various relationships in the story. Ana with her family. Chance with his grandfather. These were strong, well-written relationships that didn't rely on "fate" to show that the characters really meant something to each other.

When Ana wasn't keeping her condition a secret and endangering her life, she was a very strong character. She grew stronger as the story progressed, and she stopped letting her condition rule her life. By that I don't mean that she started being more reckless, but she stopped thinking of all the things she couldn't do because of her heart, and instead focused on what she *could* do. Watching her mature as a character was incredibly satisfying, especially after her actions for the first half of the book.

I also liked the ending. The story didn't stop on a cliffhanger - while the plot isn't over, the story was very nicely concluded, with a very sweet moment between Chance and Ana.
