From School Library Journal
Grade 2-4 With the help of his friend Gordy, Max, who first appeared in Max Malone and the Great Cereal Rip-Off (Holt, 1990), blunders from one money making scheme to another. Six-year-old Austin Healy offers to help, but Max dismisses him as too young. Undaunted, Austin embarks on his own projects--with great success. The older boys observe Austin's business prowess: he carefully thinks through each venture, taking into consideration location, the market, his overhead, and his profits. By applying these principles, Max and Gordy are at last able to make money, and they have new respect and admiration for the younger boy. Even reluctant readers will be encouraged by the large type, double-spaced text, short chapters, generous margins, and basic vocabulary. The characters are likable, the plot moves along smoothly, and there's enough dialogue to draw readers into the story. Smith's humorous line drawings, with washes of gray watercolor, punctuate the text nicely. --Laura Culberg, Chicago Public Library Cultural Center

Young people and dealing with the world of money
By Roger Bagula
Since making money may not be the most important lesson
that young people need, this short book may be more humor than
teaching. That you need to judge your market and
seize the day seems clear, but that friends can be more important than money
is also pointed out.
I just thought is was a little too casual about how
money can be made and might cause kids more trouble
than good?
I think that encouraging arts and crafts might also
lead to useful skills for some young people.
Keeping a journal thoughts might be more important than keeping a record
of money for the young person's intellectual development.

Max Malone Makes a Million
By Heather D. Mihalek
I teach 3rd grade and purchased this book to introduce the students to starting a business of their own for a writing prompt. The reading specialist reads this book to the third grade classes because it also goes along with two of the stories in one of our reading themes.
