Not much new here. I recommend you buy the 1st Ed if it is cheaper.
By B. Johnson
I learned a lot from the 1st Ed and I recently bought the 2nd Ed to see what's new in the very fast-changing field of neuroscience. There is not much new in this book. They changed the font, added a few lines here a there, dumbed down the index (a big loss if you use the index to track topics across the book). I recommend you buy the 1st Ed if it is cheaper.
This is a "for dummies" book. The style is s very choppy, but interesting, and the reader has to take responsibility for integrating their "learning" across and among topics.
I took off 1 Star for the thin, very cheap paper used to produce it. Highlighting and underlining text sometimes destroys any text on the reverse side of the page. Cheap paper; cheap scholarship? According to the data in this book, my associative neural processes made that inference about 0.5 msecs before my rational neural processes could give it the benefit of the doubt.

Good Read

I'm about half way through this one. I like it so far, but wished it went into more detail.

A good summary and introduction to a complex topic
By Brad4d
This is a pretty decent, well-organized basic book, more like an encyclopedia than anything cutting edge. It seems like a good foundation, it tries to be a factual “big picture” kind of book rather than a set of stories and anecdotes, and it doesn’t seem to push an agenda or speculation-stated-as-fact like so many introductory books on the brain and consciousness do. On a scale from 1 to 10, where 1 is too simple and 10 is too complex, I would put this one at a 4. On a scale where 1 is dull and 10 is fascinating, I’d put this one at a 4.5. On a scale where 1 is very limited and 10 is a broad overview, I’d give it a 6.5. It does require some good basic biology, so it's not a super-simple entry-level book, but neuroscience is not the kind of subject that can ne explained easily and accurately. Be realistic about your interest and scientific knowledge before buying it. The author and editors apparently worked hard on a sequentially coherent organization, and it seems reasonably accurate (at least in the areas I know something about), although I am sure a technical specialist could find errors, so I think it satisfies its objectives fairly well (definitely cross check with other sources before making those thousand dollar bets).
Although this would have added some heft to the book, I think it should have included a Bibliography (especially for web-based resources), and FAR more diagrams (especially for neuroanatomy, which is the definite key to understanding much neuroscience). Some areas were glossed over (the reticular system comes to mind), and I didn’t find nearly as much humor as other Dummies books have.
Good alternatives/additions to this book include Mapping the Mind by Rita Carter (much more richly visual), basic books by neuroscientists like Joseph LeDoux and Antonio D’Amasio (which can be more technical, opinionated, and narrowly focused), and Marian Diamond’s Human Brain Coloring Book (drawing one picture is often worth reading a thousand words, but it's slower). You’ll find many good neuroscience articles on the web, but they seem kind of scattered and of variable quality and focus.
