He directs the Integrative Study Center in Mood Disorders and the Child and Adolescent Mood Disorders Program at the UCLA Semel Institute. Dr. Miklowitz's numerous publications include the award-winning book for professionals Bipolar Disorder: A Family-Focused Treatment Approach. He lives with his wife in Los Angeles.

The best-written, most up-to-date book on this topic

I've read numerous books on this topic and am especially impressed with this one. Because the second edition is so recent (2011), it contains the latest research and findings, some of which were new to me. Miklowitz is a wonderful writer who manages to both explain concepts thoroughly and well while not sounding condescending. He addresses topics that other books don't, such as what bipolar disorder looks like to family and friends, and how it feels from the inside. He offers a lot of good information about how to head off mania, managing moods, stabilizing one's environment, dealing with meds, getting a proper diagnosis, succeeding at home and work, and concerns specific to women. Especially valuable is the chapter on where bipolar disorder comes from, and some recent research about Ehlers' social rhythm stability hypothesis. Fascinating. The only topic I would have liked him to include was the role of sunlight in BD--this would have been very helpful to a number of people I know who are very light-sensitive. But otherwise, really great information and suggestions, presented exceptionally well. Highly recommended.

Excellent guide for people with bipolar

I have bipolar disorder and this is the first book I read on the disease. Even in this day and age of internet and easy access to information I found this book tremendously useful. It provides both a broad picture of the disease and many details that bipolar patients face in their lives. After having read the book, I find it easier to accept my illness and I believe I will be more responsible with my life knowing better what my illness is. Some of the points from the book will also be something I will address when next seeing my doctor. I am sure having read the book and being able to use it as reference will improve my relationship with my psychiatrist and will add to my better quality of life with the disease.

This is a must have for every person or family member of a person with bipolar disorder. Full of comprehensive information and told in layman's language without any 'talking down'. (for instance, I learned that a side effect of one of my medications is curly hair!) Covers both traditional and complimentary therapies.

Andrew J. DuBrin is Professor Emeritus of Management in the E. Philip Saunders College of Business at the Rochester Institute of Technology, where he served as department chairman and team leader. Dr. DuBrin has taught courses and conducted research in leadership, management, organizational behavior, and career management. He presents at other colleges, career schools, and universities. He received his Ph.D. in Industrial Psychology from Michigan State University. Dr. DuBrin has experience in human resource management and is a business and personal consultant in career management, leadership, and management development. Dr. DuBrin is an established author of both textbooks and trade books, and he contributes to professional journals, magazines, newspapers, and online media. This book is outrageously overpriced. The content is common-sense, with very little insight or theoretical or research basis. Many of the sections which claim to list "leadership" characteristics are incredibly sexist. For a graduate level seminar in Management, I found this text completely laughable.

Learn portraiture sculpting from a Pro

I've owned this book for years and use it constantly. It's covered in clay, sticky notes and hi-lighter marks. He gives you detailed info along with high quality photos in an attempt to teach you to see the finer points of your model. It's a must read if you are serious about improving.

As a forensic artist, I have found Philippe and Charisse Faraut's Portrait Sculpting book to be an inspiration filled with valuable information that I refer to constantly. Philippe Faraut explains his analytical approach to art and shares it with us in this book.
Not only is Philippe Faraut an incredible portrait sculptor, but he is a wonderful teacher as well. Faraut has the ability to simplify a complex subject, the human face, and makes it easy to learn how he creates sculptures that are so lifelike. His in-depth knowledge is broken down, step by step, in easy to understand exercises.
His devoted study of skeletal and muscle anatomy creates a powerful, confident, believable representation of the human face. It is Faraut's studies of human facial anatomy and sculpture that I have found so valuable to my work in forensic facial reconstructions. This book is full of quality photographs and valuable information for portrait sculptors and forensic artists of all skill levels.

"The" sculpting book to have

This is the best instructional book on sculpting the human head that has ever been written, with clear and articulate text and photographs explaining his methods and techniques.
There is so much information in the book such as multiple resources, to find any materials you will need to sculpt with, and a lengthy bibliography to explore.
A must have book to be referred to again and again. I purchased this book when it was first printed and have used it as a constant resource of great information.

Novelist and memoirist See (The Handyman; Dreaming: Hard Luck and Good Times in America) offers a how-to guide for the wannabe writer who can take the time to "write 1,000 words" per day. Viewing writing as a lifestyle as well as a vocation plays to See's strengths as a storyteller: her advice is salted with anecdotes she's picked up in years as the head of a literary household (her daughters are also writers) and as a teacher of university creative-writing classes. Starting at the beginning, she advises neophytes not to tell anyone about their aspirations, as "that bores people to death." Later she suggests sending a handwritten note of praise ("charming notes," she calls them) to someone admired in the literary world each day, five days a week for the rest of your life. Her advice is practical and folksy, and much of it wouldn't be out of place in an upscale women's magazine. The approach is comprehensive: aspirants are encouraged to "pretend" to be a writer, "make rejection a process," set up a travel account for that first trip to New York and deduct part of the cost of their clothing from their taxes as a "costume" expense. Practical chapters on "Character," "Plot," "Geography, Time, and Space" and "Building a Scene" are a little thin, but generally sound. Though not for the experienced writer, this is an easy-to-read beginner's guide, long on chat but somewhat short on technique.

This wonderful book manages to integrate perfectly advice to writers and would-be writers with delightful snippets from See's literary and teaching career she has authored nine books, teaches English at UCLA, and reviews regularly for the Washington Post. Mostly, this is a collection of anecdotes and name dropping (from her family and inner circle to well-known authors), and at times you'll feel as if you were listening in on one of her classes. See offers advice on how to write those "thousand words a day," behave like a writer, and get published after dealing first with myriad rejection letters. There are also sections on character, plot, and point of view, but don't think See approaches any of these topics in a formulaic way. She uses her wealth of experience to offer valuable, and sometimes hilarious insights into the writing process and the importance of revision. This is my FAVORITE of my "writers on being a writer" books as much as (writers) books by Anne Lamotte, Stephen King, Ernest Hemingway (With Hemingway-A Year in Key West and Cuba-deceptive title/rare gem book), James Scott Bell-Art of War & John Gardner. Oh Barb Samuel-Girls in the Basement (If you write romance).

Carolyn See brings a civility & suggests priceless habits if you want to SERIOUSLY enter the profession. If you have a concept that won't leave your head...you love being alone, have the patience and mule-headed perseverance then you might make it.

A lot of other things are easier to do but you just don't care, to you- writing is IT.... this calling (it is REALLY a calling) grabs and hangs on to you like nothing else then read this.

She has many ideas that help build or atleast begin making relationships with people in the industry. It also teaches one how to keep your sanity, your wits and it the essence of keeping yourself grounded in what is (to artist always a surprise) a real business.

NO BUSINESS IS BUILT TO PAT YOUR HAND & SAY KEEP GOING, DEAR...it expects writers to be professionals- you have a product to market and sell. It better be polished and you NEED establish why the market NEEDS this! Who are you marketing this too? What will people come away with having read it? THINK it through, it is NOT a hobby if your serious. You need to hawk your product and be it's FIRST salesman, as distasteful as it sounds to writer (introvert types which are crazy about telling others what to do like extroverts) READ the book Quiet- to get my meaning- not a writing book but a understanding yourself and other people/ readers manual to understanding how people tick-another all time fave.

IT TEACHES YOU WHY YOU SHOULD SAY "THANK YOU FOR THE REJECTION" & WHY 1000 WORDS A DAY IS IMPORTANT*

The art of writing in all its creativity makes a rather uncomfortable bedfellow with the business of publishing.

I've worked in publishing and it was an wonderful eye opening experience. It's business, they do not reject you on looks or personaility alone if you write really well. But it takes both luck and talent and timing. Won't lie.

Publishing is first and foremost designed to get books to the public & to make money. In this current climate something treated as evil (lowly informed consumers think) because I have seen ONE highly -successful (very-spun off to movie & tv shows) book carry a company for several years and thus be able usher in many new authors who otherwise wouldn't have been given the chance to nuture a writing career receiving professional support. Look at the many, many spin-offs from Harry Potter. JK didn't know she'd create an INDUSTRY when she started a children's story, you think?

Publishing is a tricky business, its essentially a one hand washes the other, symbiotic relationship. But Carole See shows the reader that like many other ventures it is built with care and (often times lost art of civility-where so many people think the only way to get somewhere is pushy) establishing and building professional & courteous reputation.

You can sometimes work with people for years and decades. So it is a balancing act of relationships & professionalism rolled into one neat profession that oft times lets you stay home & work in your pj's for months on end then dress up like a real adult and professional...definitely good if you like to juggle!

She has many gems of thoughtful touches I haven't read anywhere else. She really shows how to come off as a professional even if you're a rank beginner. These are good lessons if you want to put a toe in the water of self publishing, professionalism if never seen as a fault in this field.

There are not many books that I finish reading and want to start back up again so that her wonderful lessons sink into my brain further.

But this is a must have to a writers library.

Well worth reading

I've read some excellent book about writing but this is the one only one I can remember when I laughed out loud so many times. The author describes not only writing, but the writing life. She doesn't shy away from the experience of getting form rejection notes or from the experience of reading what you have written and finding it to be utter bilge. She also discusses the feeling of seeing your name in print and selling your work.

I was impressed that she addressed so much of what being a writer entails. I found her advice to be really helpful for those committed to this crazy business. Ms See is remarkably open about herself and honest about her past.

I would recommend this to anyone who is serious about writing.

LOVE this book. Wish we all had a Carolyn See in our lives to encourage us to do our best. Excellent writing advice presented with perspective, experience, honesty, AND kindness (which everyone could use more of). And meant for ANY kind of writer.

THE 3RD EDITION OF THIS BOOK WAS MY DAILY COMPANION

I did a 4 year circumnavigation on my yacht (a 34 foot steel sloop)and jimmy Cornel "world cruising routes (3rd edition)" was my daily companion. It helped me a great lot to plan cruises and ocean passages. It allowed me to choose the right sailing areas at the right time. Furthemore, whoever is interested in climatology, weather, currents, oceanography will find a wealth of information in this book. The dreamer as well as the sailer will definitely have a good buy with this book.

About the Author

Dr. Sriram Kalaga is currently a Senior Engineer in the Transmission Line Division of Ulteig Engineers. He holds bachelors, masters and doctoral degrees in Civil engineering with a specialization in Structural Engineering and Mechanics. He has published more than 35 research papers in various journals and conferences. His research background included finite element methods, buckling of beam-columns, nonlinearities, low-cost composites and reliability-based approaches. He has been involved in transmission line design in the USA for 16 years while his overall experience as a Civil Engineer spans over 36 years. As a consulting engineer, he developed various in-house design manuals and technical specifications related to transmission structures.
Siriam�conducts regular seminars on transmission line design and also participates in teaching workshops on transmission structural design. He is currently a guest editor for an International Civil Engineering Journal and has advised graduate students on their theses. In addition to being a member of ASCE, AISC and ACI, he is currently serving on the ASCE-FRP Blue Ribbon Committee on composite transmission structures. He is a licensed professional engineer in several states in the USA.�

Dr. Prasad Yenumula is currently a Principal Engineer from the Transmission Line Engineering System Standards of Duke Energy.�He earned his bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees in Civil engineering along with an MBA degree with a specialization in Global Management. With a post-doctoral fellowship in engineering, he published more than 50 research papers in various journals and conferences. He worked as a line design engineer, line standards engineer and lines asset manager in the US & Canada for over 20 years. Prasad was responsible for managing and leading a number of line projects and special assignments, along with developing various technical standards & specifications. He is a professor (adjunct) with Gonzaga University, Washington and contributes to the development and teaching of the on-line transmission & distribution engineering Master’s program, and�teaches business students at the University of Phoenix.�His�training classes are�in the areas of line design, standards and line design software.�
Prasad�is currently the Chair of line design task force of the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) and Vice-Chair of CEATI (Center for Energy Advancement through Technological Innovation) International’s TODEM interest group.
