In Eyes Wide Open, Isaac Lidsky draws on his experience of achieving immense success, joy, and fulfillment while losing his sight to a blinding disease to show us that it isn’t external circumstances, but how we perceive and respond to them, that governs our reality.
Fear has a tendency to give us tunnel vision—we fill the unknown with our worst imaginings and cling to what’s familiar. But when confronted with new challenges, we need to think more broadly and adapt. When Isaac Lidsky learned that he was beginning to go blind at age thirteen, eventually losing his sight entirely by the time he was twenty-five, he initially thought that blindness would mean an end to his early success and his hopes for the future. Paradoxically, losing his sight gave him the vision to take responsibility for his reality and thrive. Lidsky graduated from Harvard College at age nineteen, served as a Supreme Court law clerk, fathered four children, and turned a failing construction subcontractor into a highly profitable business.
Whether we’re blind or not, our vision is limited by our past experiences, biases, and emotions. Lidsky shows us how we can overcome paralyzing fears, avoid falling prey to our own assumptions and faulty leaps of logic, silence our inner critic, harness our strength, and live with open hearts and minds. In sharing his hard-won insights, Lidsky shows us how we too can confront life's trials with initiative, humor, and grace.

Inspiring Read
By L. M. Keefer
This book is about overcoming obstacles and provides a mindset on how to do so. It's an encouraging book. You can't help but think while reading it that if the author, while blind, could graduate from Harvard Law School, work for a top Manhattan law firm, and successfully salvage a failing business and grow it ten-fold, maybe I can overcome the obstacles facing me. Along the way he became the father of triplets and another daughter.
As a career coach, I am fascinated by folks' career trajectories. Isaac Lidsky has had one of the most unusual you will see. He started out as a teenage sitcom actor as Weasel in SAVED BY THE BELL at the age of 14 - although had acted in hundreds of commercials prior - graduated from Harvard with degrees in math and computer at the early age of 19, graduated from Harvard Law and clerked for Sandra Day O'Connor, worked for a law firm but gave it all up when A Career Assessment showed he might consider having his own company. He then bought a failing company and turned it around.
While reading this book you may not come away with self development principles which easily come to mind, but you WILL be inspired by Lidsky's example. This book is ideal - and a possible 5-star read - for someone feeling they have a handicap which prevents them from creating success. It could be a health issue, a physical impairment, feeling too old, feeling inferior or whatever. Lidsky has an inspiring TED talk on the topic you can find online, too.
Lidsky encourages you to view challenges with eyes wide open, tackle your fear, use strategies for progress in struggle, learn about acceptance and surrender, figure out your values with regards to success and goals, listen with understanding and see with your heart among other concepts. Each chapter addresses a concept.
Some of the ideas I appreciated in this book:
* identify discrete challenges. Seek creative solutions to them. To get from A to Z, focus on getting from A to B. You're likely to change course long before Z anyway.
* build momentum, always momentum, above all momentum
* focus on the next step
While there are abundant self-help books written, many of the authors have not faced the unique challenges which Lidsky has. Lidsky said his blindness has been a blessing in many ways. As a lawyer, Lidsky found juries trusted and liked him. Lidsky found his blindness caused him to see things differently than when he had physical sight. Blindness gave him a kind of insight. While I'm not sure I could consider blindness a blessing, this book helps you understand that viewing obstacles fearlessly, tackling your fear and employing creative solutions can be a path to success. This book prods you to not lose hope or think a situation is insurmountable. That's a great message for the new year.

An interesting case study on an overachieving blind man. Little relevant self-help
By Abacus
Isaac Lidsky is an extraordinary individual. His achievements at an early age suggest that he is a genuinely gifted polymath prodigy. His achievements include completing a Harvard degree in math and computer science by age 19, a Harvard Law degree, serving as Law clerk for two Supreme Court justices, successful Internet start up entrepreneur, and CEO of a large construction company. And, doing all of this by his mid-thirties. How much more renaissance-like successful can one be? Now, to top it all he suffered from a degenerative eye retina disease that first struck in his mid teens and rendered him functionally blind at 25! By this time, his curriculum-vitae is genuinely incomprehensible. How could he complete all his upper level degrees and technical professional achievements as he became progressively and eventually totally blind?
Lidsky goes on to advance that his blindness became a true competitive advantage. He describes our sense of sight as a camera that constructs a virtual world that is affected by emotional, perceptual, and psychological biases. He describes our sense of sight as being so distorting and distracting that doing without as he had to do allowed him to perceive what really matters, to focus on what is really effective. And, by doing so he was able to achieve everything he has including a very happy family life with a beautiful wife and four happy children.
Somehow, I’d rather keep my eyesight. With all its mentioned flaws by the author, it is still an incredible information processing apparatus that is second to none among our senses.
His advice can boil down to a few tried and true concepts including taking full responsibility for your action, developing a sense of purpose and vision by knowing and being integer to your true self, persevering in the face of challenge, focusing on what is important, defining success in a broad and organic way of all facets of life including family, happiness, balance, and legacy.
However, I am not sure if the whole Lidsky package is truly inspiring or genuinely discouraging or completely irrelevant. His achievements are a function of a truly superior mind. You have to be born with a mightily powerful mind to achieve what he has done academically and professionally. Additionally, he also is blessed with an extraordinary level of introspection (understanding self) and adaptability in grasping his social and physical environment by compensating with his brain and all his other senses for his lack of eyesight.
For the common mortal, I am not sure how this Self-Help book truly helps. Is Lidsky a truly relevant example? Or is he a rather unique overachiever who overcame what seems like an insurmountable handicap (blindness)?
Much of his methods can appear somewhat stilted to a normal human being. His whole definition of success (in chapter 6) following accounting principles (market value, book value, balance sheet, income statement, cash flow) appears really awkward. Lidsky accounting framework is ill suited to capture the behavioral complexities of human success however defined.
Along the same line, within chapter 7 where he teaches you how to listen well some of his suggestions or achievements border on the absurd. Those include the ability to develop speed-listening techniques whereby you could listen to an audio book at a high multiple of the speed of normal human voice pace. He indicates that others listening at such speed without training would just hear a very fast pace high pitch incomprehensible gibberish. Also, with training he claims to be able to follow two conversations at the same time.
Countering those experiences and suggestions there is the entire body of work of Daniel Kahneman as depicted in “Thinking Slow Thinking Fast.” Contrary to popular belief the mind is poor at multi-tasking. Also, whenever a situation gets complex from an analytical point of view fast thinking or reading or listening just won’t work. A foundation of success may not so much depend into attempting to turn your brain into a hyper fast multi-tasking computer; but, instead doing just the opposite. Breath, slow it down, and focus intensely on one single task at a time. Doing one thing very well beats attempting to do numerous ones simultaneously with poor results.
He recently gave a TED Talk. He comes across remarkably well as a very smooth speaker. He actually does not come across as a blind man. His sense of his physical self and his surrounding, even his gazing at the audience completely hides the fact that he is blind. I do not question that he is blind. I just find it baffling that he is blind. The one thing that I found a bit unsettling is that he mechanically repeated word for word all the metaphors in the first chapter of his book in his talk. This may give a hint to his success. He obviously has a superior mind in many different ways (computer science, math, Law). And, I think it is assisted by an exceptional memory.
In summary, I consider this book more of an interesting stand-alone case study of an overachiever who overcame blindness than a book that is much help for anyone else.

Very good
By A reader
This is an outstanding book by a strong, perceptive highly accomplished person. Isaac Lidsky graduated from Harvard University at 19, got a law degree from Harvard, worked for very impressive peoplel succeeded in turning around a struggling business under very arduous conditions, and is the father of four children including triplets.. In addition to all of this, he coped with the slow loss of his vision from age 13 to 25. He writes about many of these experiences, filling in with his insights about blindness, change, adversity, unwelcome change, inner strength, etc. etc. His writing about fear and the conquering of it is just about the most powerful that I have read.
The opening chapters of this book are riveting. Lidsky's account of the medical examinations and diagnosis of his eye disease is so compelling that I was glued to this book. My one reservation about the book is that the later chapters could have used some pruning - the writing tend to wander a bit, focusing more on Lidsky's experiences than on the messages he is conveying. (For that, 4.5 stars.) At times, Lidsky switches to advice, addressing the reading audience as "you," which to some might be offputting at first.
Still, there is much common sense throughout the book, and much to think about, and I really appreciate the chance to explore a very different perspective on so many aspects of life. Highly recommended (especially the early chapters!)
