About the Author

Peter Felten is assistant provost, director of the Center for Engaged Learning, and associate professor of history at Elon University. H-Dirksen L. Bauman is professor and chair of American Sign Language and Deaf Studies and coordinator for the Office of Bilingual Teaching and Learning at Gallaudet. Aaron Kheriaty is the director of Residency Training and Medical Education in the Department of Psychiatry at the University of California, Irvine. Edward Taylor is a professor of education and vice provost and dean of Undergraduate Academic Affairs at the University of Washington.

Transforming Higher Education One Conversation at a Time

Transformative Conversations is a pilgrim's handbook into the heart of higher education. Based on the experience of four seasoned professors and administrators, the book provides a guide for creating and sustaining small, conversational communities on campus aimed at deepening the educational experience.

Many professors and administrators entered academia excited by the chance to research what they care most about, share knowledge in ways that genuinely enable students to grow, and help nurture intellectual awakening in society. In too many colleges and universities, however, the pressures to publish, garner grants, train students simply for jobs, build the school's reputation, and otherwise keep the institutional machine humming deplete much of that original enthusiasm and commitment.

Transformative Conversations provides a way back--or, really, a way forward. The authors explain how small conversational groups--animated by open-ended exploration and based on trust, honesty, accountability, and other values--can breakdown the divide between our personal and professional lives, and re-energize our teaching, research, and administration. Furthermore, they offer step-by-step instruction for starting "formation mentoring communities" (FMC) on any campus.

After reading the book, I am committed to starting a FMC at my university and excited to unleash my own and the collective passion of my colleagues in the service of greater self-knowledge, skilled pedagogy, and institutional enhancement.

Good information, but written like an academic

Lots of good information and material to build a discussion group around - but it has that "you gotta read it because it's worthy" style of writing. Too bad - wish an editor had taken a red pencil and made it more readable for those long out of graduate school and no longer required to have good material made boring.
