She (my daughter) was ecstatic over getting this and another book for Christmas. She's graduating from Harvard Law School this year and Antonin Scalia was one of our best Supreme Court judges ever that lived. So sad that he passed. This is a wonderful book that he and B Garner together wrote that that benefits many Law students! Well worth the money! Prime shipping a definite plus!

This book establishes a good framework in which to make decisions. As a school board member I find the concepts very useful. As a physicist / troubleshooter I find the ideas applicable. Everyone who is faced with a public life should read this. People who must write law, even for low level consumption will benefit.

A MUST READ book if you are alone or thinking of going it alone! Very inspiring book!

This book I have found so meaningful about the art of being alone. In today's society, more and more people are finding themselves being alone whether by choice or by situation (such as death of spouse, divorce etc). For me, I wanted to read about REAL PEOPLE with REAL STORIES of being alone and their real experiences. So I can honestly say that after researching online for a truly helpful book, this one is the one that advise to you for these reasons:

1) There are MANY STORIES/EXAMPLES of people who give their stories of how they coped alone. Each story has whether the person made the choice to be alone or it was in a sense FORCED onto them. They state how they learned to deal with aloneness and in many cases learn to enjoy this.

2) It is inspiring for anyone who is already single or who wants to know what to possibly expect if later on in life (senior years), they will encounter aloneness.

3) This book explains about the MODERN DAY HERMIT and why some people choose this lifestyle and how they are able to carry this out financially, emotionally and mentally.

4) The best chapter in this book is Chapter Seven called The Dragon at the Gate of Solitude: Loneliness. In this chapter, there is a story of a lady who struggled with being alone and with loneliness. She was at the point of sucide. Then she learned lessons that really helped her to learn to deal with the loneliness and be alone and to a point begin to enjoy this.
If you are alone, lonely, etc, this chapter alone in this book is worth buying this book. For me, I have already read this chapter three times!

5) More information in the back of the book. There is a list of more helpful books including one that is a helpful workbook/diary that is so helpful for a person alone who wants to grow as a person and embrace being alone. Also there are some helpful websites there.

A wonderful, rare gem of a book.....

Not long ago, I was looking to buy a car because my old car wasn't worth what it was costing
to continually fix. So, one night, after a pretty exhaustive search, I happened upon a used
1996 Toyota Camry with 42,000 miles on the odometer. The salesman told me the car had just
been traded in that day for a new car and a car as such, with so few miles and in such pristine condition,
appeared on the lot once or twice a year. The rest is history. In other words, the car was a rare
find. That's exactly how I feel about Lionel Fisher's book---a wonderful and rare find that
has left an impression on me that I know will not fade with time.

Folks, here's the truth---I love this book. If I could dress it up and make it human,
I'd be in love. It is an amazing portrait of not only the author's journey into solitude on
a beach in the Pacific Northwest, but also includes many other individual stories of people who,
for various reasons, have plumbed the deepest depths of solitude in a grand, inward trek tailored
to their own specific needs.

The stories in this book touched me. They really did. In this volume, you will find people dealing
with death, regret, a search for meaning and validity in a world of unknowns, those attempting to live
in accordance with their own inward nature, those using solitude as an exercise in self-indulgence, etc.
The chapter dealing with regret and the individual stories contained within really spoke to me in a very
intimate way. The chapter on dying brought tears to my eyes. So many of the individual stories
I could relate to on a deep level, and in a very real way, I could see myself in those people.
I felt empathy and connection with many of the people in this book. You'll find so many different
portraits in this book and the author, to his credit, uses this diversity as a way to impart the many different ways
people use solitude to deal with whatever is happening in their respective lives and individual
circumstances.

I came away from this book with a renewed sense of compassion and understanding for my fellow human
being. I'm a life-long loner. I really appreciate this book. I want to thank Lionel Fisher for writing
it. You've done a wonderful deed. This book has brought me comfort and a heightened sense of all that is
noble in this world. It has given me a glimpse into the struggles others have gone through, and I'm so grateful.
Solitude has been my constant companion in life, and it has taught me much. Lionel Fisher, thank you
for allowing all those who have read "Celebrating Time Alone" to participate and share in the tribulations
and triumphs known as life. This book will forever be on my bookshelf, and I rarely re-read a
book, but this will be one of the rare exceptions.

For those who happen upon this review, please know that if you are interested in the subject of solitude
and the inward journey, this book is a wonderful find. Read it, absorb it, let the stories of fellow travelers
speak to you. If you allow it, this book has the capacity to heighten your awareness and who knows, possibly
change your life.....

My story of splendid solitude

This book has been by my side when I felt joyous in my solitude and desperate in my loneliness. I think it was written for me and those who love solitude for the beautiful gifts it gives us -peace, serenity, self-love, self-knowledge, self-reliance, creativity, and an understanding of Nature. Sometimes we might struggle when solitude leaves our side and its ugly counterpart, loneliness, visits us but we can be comforted by knowing that this process will make us stronger and more appreciating of who we are. Thus, solitude has become my goddess/god and constant companion!

Lionel Fisher does a fantastic job in presenting us all these admirable humans who revel in solitude and came out of loneliness victorious. My favorite stories are from Ed Sorenson and Alberto Terego; both of them became an inspiration to me. Sorenson is a well-educated man that has rejected some of society's conventions by holding a low-income, part-time job so that he gets more time to do the things he enjoys most, enjoying alone time whenever possible, being truly independent and self-reliant, and indulging himself without hurting others. Ed is one of my role models when thinking of how I want my life to be. On the other side, Terego is a curmudgeon who reminds me of a sage (Diogenes of Sinope or any wise and honest philosopher)...and he's funny too. I wish there were more men like these two!

This book discusses time, loss, sorrow, self-indulgence, loneliness, being alone together, mindfulness, sexuality, getting rid of fears and regrets, egolessness, authenticity, being a curmudgeon, death, and being comfortable with solitude. I have highlighted so many sentences and read it so many times that it has become my favorite book; it truly speaks to my heart and soul.

At last, here is one of my favorite passages by Lionel Fisher, "How sad, the god of solitude teaches, that we spend our entire lives auditioning for others -parents, teachers, employers, suitors, spouses, lovers, strangers, friends- only to realize that we should put ourselves at the head of the line, earned our own love, respect, and affection. And everything elsewould have taken care of itself. How tragic, she whispers mournfully, that we wait so long to free ourselves from other's people expectations, to find our true worth in our own eyes instead of in the eyes of others." Please, if you're struggling with loneliness or think of us solitaires (happy loners) as losers or deppressive, buy this book and it will open the doors to what solitude really is, SPLENDID! Go on and celebrate time alone, yours will be another story of splendid solitude.

I ate at the restaurant and really wanted these recipes

I live in Florida and while visiting Northern England my husband and I drove for 3 hours just to have lunch there, after seeing the restaurant featured on Gordon Ramsey's show. The food was so delicious! I have wanted to try to make them ever since, and now I can.

Unlike a lot of electronic cookbooks, this one stands out as being super easy to navigate. Indexed, searchable and the writer wants you to succeed with her fabulous recipes and the recipes are full of suggestions. Pricey , but so worth it, it seems like a cooking school course. Written extremely well, I think this book was a long time in the making.

Americans, you will need to convert the measurements. Again, so worth it.

A Wonderful Cookbook

This is a great cookbook. The information is well laid out and the table of contents and links work better than any I have used on my Ipad. I have found that I have learned to be a better cook by using these recipes. Make no mistake the recipes take some skill and patience and planning but the rewards are incredible. Indian cooking often seems a little overwhelming but with Prashad's the process is easy and straight forward. Many of the techniques you learn translate to other recipes in the book so the depth of knowledge grows as you try new and different recipes. Now the question is not "What's for dinner?" but rather "Are you cooking Prashad's?"

Worth the price! A great find!

Don't let the price of this book deter you from purchasing it. This is a wonderful Indian cookbook with some unique recipes that are not found in others.

One of the things that I really love about this book is that some of the appetizers are given an alternate choice of the traditional (deep-fry) or simplified method (baking w/out oil) method of cooking. I'm very health conscious so it is nice to have an alternate way of enjoying food without the oil involved. The Prashad spring rolls are a fantastic recipe, alongside the veggie samosas, kachori (spiced peas & garlic), and pethis (garlic-coconut potato balls). The recipe book also contains the street snacks/food found in India, main dishes, rice (the green rice is AWESOME!), breads, salads, dips, chutneys, drinks, soups, and sweets. So many recipes!

For those that did not read the title correctly, there aren't any meat and fish recipes in the book so don't bother beating yourself up looking for them. I really do like the fact that the author does clearly label each recipe if they are vegan, wheat-free, onion & garlic-free, nut-free, and/or healthy option. There are pages of what certain spices do (along with their respective Indian names), kitchen tips, suggested menus at the back of the book for feeding a party, and venues of where to buy spices etc... There aren't any pressure or slow cooker recipes listed.

For the American buyers, I will warn you that the majority of the book does NOT use the typical U.S. Metric System. It will tell you the tablespoon, teaspoon etc... measurements as shown, but when it comes to something like 400 grams of blah blah blah, you need to either have the kitchen gadgets that show that type of measurement or make a chart of the conversions handy when you are in the kitchen. If anything, at least it is a great way to "force" you to learn the metric system that the majority of the world uses.

All the recipes are easy to follow, well-written, and stick closely to Northern Indian cooking.

Country music songwriter/singer/fiddle player Daniels has had numerous hits with "story" songs featuring catchy tunes. The title story in this collection is an expanded prose version of one of his most popular recordings about a fiddling contest between the devil and a confident youth. Another of his hits, "The Story of Uneasy Rider," is also transformed into a short story here, but neither conversion works very well. Without the snappy music, the tales fall flat. Thirteen other stories and a short autobiographical chapter suffer from underdevelopment as well. Colorful characters need to have more than their quirks described to make a book interesting. For die-heard Daniels fans only. Will Hepfer, SUNY at Buffalo Libs.

The Devil Went Down to Georgia = The Stories Behind the Songs!!!!!

This is a very good story book by Charlie Daniels, you get the stories behind some of his greatest songs. These include the legend of Wooley Swamp, the story of Uneasy Rider, Trudy, The Devil Went Down to Georgia, and Honky Tonk Avenue. The book begins with a history of Charlie Daniels from Childhood on up. It also contains several stories written by Charlie, that are not directly related to a particular song. Charlie is a great story teller, and this book proves it. It's a great book to have if you like Charlies Daniels' songs, because it will help you to understand the songs better. Thanks!!!!!

Fun stories from a master storyteller

Charlie Daniels is a country/southern rock musician most famous for his fiddle-duel song The Devil Went Down to Georgia. He's had a long career as a song writer and this is his first foray into literary writing rather than song writing. Some of the stories are based off songs from the band (like The Devil Went Down to Georgia and Uneasy Rider) and some are character sketches or scenes from life. The stories work fairly well though the titular story doesn't work as well as the song on which it is based. On the other hand, he nicely expands the Legend of Wooley Swamp into a longer story with well-crafted bookends.

Comedy is prevalent and Daniels has a natural hand at it. The story of two cowboys escorting some bulls to New York City is particularly enjoyable. He's quite good at poking fun at both Southerners and Northerners, rich people and poor people, smart people and dumb people. The even spread of comedic targets shows a certain amount of class and that he just loves telling stories rather than scoring points. It's not a great book but is enjoyable.

Deserted Island Experience No More.....

A tortuous non-fiction account of two strangers who chose to be castaways on an uninhabited island. Lucy Irvine answered an ad in Timeout by Gerald Kingsland, an English adventurer with a dubious past (visit The Dulwich Society) looking for a "wife" for a year on a tropical island and was selected. They were off within months with writer advances and minor savings. Their preparation for the trip appeared extraordinarily casual however their unimpressive provisions might have been due to a lack of funds. Prior to landing at Tuin, an island they found only when they reached Australia, they had no knowledge of its local environment and did not mix with the native islanders who had evidently sheltered on the island before. They never thought that the vegetable garden they rated as high on their survival list would later be doomed by insufficient water.

But even before this, the two would-be castaways were troubled by the basis of their relationship. Both were required by the Immigration authorities to be actually married in order to live together on an island which they had to find on arrival at Australia. Lucy had previously declined a marriage proposal from Gerald (called "G" in the book) but then agreed in order to facilitate the venture. Thus she found herself in a legal bind with a man who she had many doubts and withheld her body which she had previously shared. G's wounded pride must have been battered even more by her constant naked appearance on the island.

The book vacillates between pure delight with the remoteness of the island and absolute despair at their discomfort together and the cruelty of the weather. While she worked out a role for herself on Tuin Island as some sort of hunter/gatherer/camp cook, G with his leg ulcers tended the ill-fated garden and sometimes went fishing. He was to frequently remind her unsuccessfully of their wedded arrangement and would not build a permanent shelter until much later. As the months went by with no rain, the harsh conditions had them living impossibly. But Lucy remained resolute, finding distraction and relief out of solitary escapades, just soaking in the island that she so loved. To understand Lucy, one should read her book "Runaway". A pair of kayakers came by with a census form, attended to their tropical wounds and left them to sort themselves out.

Their dream of an island paradise was to become more and more a nightmare with the persistent drought and low food supplies and eventually, Lucy became very ill after eating poisonous beans. G's leg ulcers were debilitating, but he looked after her during a time of need. The stark rawness of the entire experience is captured by the book like a devastating work of art but threading events however loosely on a timeline is not catered for (something survivors would normally do) therefore, whatever progress they made as survivors can only be vaguely assessed. By then, both were staring at starvation and had it not been for the fortuitous visit by Torres Strait Islanders from Badu Island, they would very likely have perished.

The Islanders initially shared some supplies and taught them how to find food and water on the island and from nearby islands. They then brought engine wrecks to G, who with his mechanic skills was able to revive. As food handouts came in exchange for more mechanical repairs, this altered the dynamics of the Castaway means of living completely. No longer leading an existential life, the whole Castaway project diminished as Lucy and G increasingly allowed civilized comforts into their fold, and even stayed on Badu Island for a short while. This troubled Lucy but she had to compromise in the presence of a larger community and even adjusted to having sex between them as she saw G emerge with more substance before her eyes. The couple returned to Tuin Island to live out the final period in much better shape and with somewhat incongruous fantasies between them. Thirteen months after their arrival on Tuin Island, the time was up and Lucy left on her own, according to their original terms. The book is incredible from a voyeuristic view into foolhardiness, but it does offer plenty to learn about survival behaviour.

The Story of the original "Survivors"

"Castaway" captivated my imagination from the very first page. The story of the constantly evolving relationship between the author Lucy Irvine and Gerald Kingsland touched my heart and soul. Starting in mid 1981 these two people, who met through a personals ad in a newspaper, take on the challenge of recreating a Robinson Crusoe experience on a deserted island. Can modern man/woman survive? Lucy Irvine excellently tracks two symultaneous stories throughout the book - what their day-to-day quest was like and the interpersonal relationship between Lucy and G. The emotions that leap off the pages through Lucy's unique statement and explanation writing style will make you feel like you are in her skin as she runs the gamut of the highs and lows in their adventure. Be sure to obtain a copy of the book that includes the maps AND pictures as they will help clarify statements in the text. I'm surprised this isn't required reading on every college campus as "Castaway" could be the handbook for today's women of great strength, independence and determination. A decade before the "age of women" Lucy Irvine demonstrates how an intelligent, strong and determined woman uses the power of her mind and body to not only keep herself alive but her man as well. She is the ultimate wind beneath his wings. Gerald Kingsland was convinced that a man and woman could find nirvana if they were left alone on a deserted island for at least a year to develop their relationship no matter how different they were to begin with. In 1996 in a newspaper interview while he was in London looking for a partner to accompany him on his 8th or 9th attempt to prove his theory Gerald called himself the "sex pest of the South Seas". Lucy Irvine was the only partner that ever survived an entire year with him. Castaway is the incredible story of how she did it. The only unfortunate thing is that "Castaway" feels like the second book in a trilogy with Lucy's "Runaway" being the first. Sure would like to see the remainder of her life story with a third book focused especially on her transition back to civilization after Tuin and what long-term effect her relationship with Gerald had on her future relationships. Was this the book that inspired "Castaway" on the BBC and "Survivor" on CBS? See what you think. The book is unfortunately out-of-print but more than worth the hassle of finding it wherever you can.

For those interested in real life survival adventures...

Good story about a real life adventure, which spend way too much time on their hunting and fishing for food (which I suppose would be great for those who might actually find themselves in a survival situation), for my tastes... but truly amazing how these two people lived and survived for a year on this tropical island.
