About the Author
Neil W. Ashcroft is a British solid-state physicist. Ashcroft completed his undergraduate studies at the University of New Zealand in 1958 and received his PhD in 1964 from the University of Cambridge for research investigating the Fermi surfaces of metals. Following his PhD, Ashcroft completed postdoctoral research at the University of Chicago and at Cornell University, where he became a Professor in 1975. In 1990 he was named the Horace White Professor of Physics, and was elected to emeritus status in 2006. He served as the director for the Laboratory of Atomic and Solid State Physics at Cornell University (1979-1984), the director for the Cornell Center for Materials Research (1997-2000), and as the deputy director for the High Energy Synchrotron Source (1990-1997). Between 1986 and 1987, he served as the head of the Condensed Matter division of the American Physical Society. His textbook on solid-state physics, written with N. David Mermin, is a standard text in the field. Since 1997, he has been a member of the National Academy of Sciences.

N. David Mermin is Horace White Professor of Physics Emeritus at Cornell University. He has received the Lilienfeld Prize of the American Physical Society and the Klopsteg Award of the American Association of Physics Teachers. He is a member of the U. S. National Academy of Sciences and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. Professor Mermin has written on quantum foundational issues for several decades, and is known for the clarity and wit of his scientific writings. Among his other books are Solid State Physics (with N. W. Ashcroft, Thomson Learning 1976), Boojums all the Way Through (Cambridge University Press 1990), and It's about Time: Understanding Einstein's Relativity (Princeton University Press 2005).

Old book, but the physics is the same
By Reviewer
The Ashcroft text is superior to other Solid State texts because of its readbility. It is not over-written like some texts, and its presentation of fundamentals is appropriate for a graduate course in solid state physics. It is not fair to under-rate the book simply because it is "old". Despite having several decades to write a better book, few authors have.

There are advanced chapters toward the end of the book that lay the foundations for superconductivity and vibrations in solids, among other things. Like most physics books, the direct application of the physics to real world tools is an afterthought, as it took me 5 years of experience to finally realize that Ashcroft's treatment of phonons in later chapters could be used to describe the piezoelectric efficiency of acoustic sensors. Perhaps this is because the book is dated, or perhaps it is because many physics texts fail to make the link between consumer technologies and fundamental breakthroughs in understanding, as if it is beneath the moral integrity of physics to worry about the engineering that follows. The work in superconductivity is advanced for a typical solid state course and might be better for a special topics series, as it was when I was a graduate student.

Ashcroft will serve as a good primer for most solid state topics, and it is well augmented with Kittel. A lesser book by Ibach and Luth, while it has just a few positive qualities, will fail a student unless they have Ashcroft on hand. Between Ashcroft and Kittel, a student would have a strong reference library.

As a side note, while it seems to be par for the course for most solid state texts, little is done to address the findamentals of crystalline structure that have led to the growth and evolution of the field of materials science. One of Ashcroft's introductory chapters summarizes a fundamental MSE text (such as Callister) very well by describing different crystalline structures and calculating packing fractions. However, it requires a leap of understanding to see that solid state physics is not just about semiconductors, but it is also about strength of materials and the fundamentals of transmission electron microscopy, among other things. Ashcroft is not to blame for this oversight - perhaps publishers would rather separate these topics for diversification and an overall increase in sales.

In short, if you are an instructor considering a text for you upcoming course, I strongly recommend Ashcroft. The physics hasn't changed since the book was introduced, though the applications have.

An excellent introductory book for solid-state physicists
By Wirawan Purwanto
Ashcroft and Mermin is an "amplified" version of basic solid state book! Must have!
This book offers an excellent, step-by-step introduction to crucial concepts of solid-state physics. I think, the authors have nicely avoided "reasoning surprises" that usually bother novice readers. To read this book smoothly, certainly you need "Physics 101" background; but other than that, the book seems to be self-contained. But don't be surprised if the problems are quite challenging (some are tough)!
The development of solid-state physics is presented in a more historical fashion--in opposition to rigid, systematic, definitive, and (sometimes) boring way that is commonly adopted by many other solid-state books.
In my opinion (hopefully wrong), this book has some shortcomings:
(1) detailed technical aspects, e.g. in XRD--you must refer to other technical books if you want to delve into them.
(2) links to interesting, research-related topics in modern solid state physics.
(3) new editions since the first release (how come?? Solid state physics has grown rapidly!).
These are probably due to the the introductory nature of this book. But it is good if there is a future revision, with point (2) above added in it, at least in the form of problems.

Old, but still best
By A Customer
Whenever you think about learning Solid State Physics, or the first stage of Condensed Matter Physics for college level, the Ashcroft/Mermin book is always the first textbook that you should chose. It covers almost everything basic carefully.
But a couple of things make the evaluation lower.
First, and obviously, the book is too old. It was published 18 years ago and never got any new edition. During this long long long time, Solid State Physics has already changed much. Semiconductors are already the most important topics and the discoveries of high Tc Superconductivity and Quantum Hall Effect in low dimensional systems have already largely switched people's interest in physics of Solid to a regime stressed on interactions and disorders... Many books start trying to put these topics together, but nothing better than seeing a new version of Ashcroft/Mermin with the new topics well integrated in.
The other one is about the presentation of this book. I just taught the class of Solid State Physics last year for the first time, and it turns out the presentation of the book is not so friendly to everyone. The chaptors of Nearly free electrons and Tight Binding model of the Band Theory are made fairly long, while not constructed in the best way, resulting in the puzzle of many students. Of course, if you study carefully, you still can get the ideas, but a lot of time is wasted. Considering the importance of these chaptors, this really pulls back the evaluation of the book. My suggestion is, when you study Solid State Physics, have more books as your reference, don't stick only on A/M when you feel troubled, although the A/M is still the best one in general.
I really hope the new edition of this book comes out soon, but considering the age of the authors, it may never happen.

The Lunatics Have Taken Over the Asylum, by Ian Hollingshead

Telegraph letter writers, that most astute body of political commentators, are probably not alone in thinking that politics has taken some strange turns in recent years. The first coalition government since 1945 has led the country from the subprime to the ridiculous, lumbering from Leveson to Libya, riots to referendums, pasty-gate to pleb-gate, Brooks to Bercow, the Bullingdon Club to the Big Society.

Five years is a long time in politics. Fortunately for us, it has also been a most fertile period for the Telegraph's legion of witty and erudite letter writers, who have their own therapeutic way of dealing with the pain. An institution in their own right, theirs is a welcome voice of sanity in a world in which the lunatics appear finally to have taken over the asylum.

About the Author
Iain Hollingshead spent two years on the Letters to the Editor desk before becoming a feature writer for the Daily Telegraph. His more serious assignments included reporting on the student riots and the Occupy movement, as well as interviewing the likes of Michael Atherton, Martin Clunes and Nicholas Parsons. For two years he wrote the satirical 'Friends' column in the Sunday Telegraph, which imagined coalition life behind the scenes with Dave and Samantha, Nick and Miriam.

His less serious assignments have included taking a champagne bath in Las Vegas with six albino rabbits, spending three days behind the scenes at the Miss England competition, camping outside Westminster Abbey for the Royal Wedding, learning to dance in Mamma Mia!, training with the Royal Marines and experiencing a Brighton nudist beach first-hand.

He now writes freelance for the paper, teaches Politics and History in a secondary school in London and has edited six bestselling collections of unpublished letters to The Daily Telegraph.

To whom it may concern...
By FictionFan
As any Brit will know, The Daily Telegraph is one of our more right-wing newspapers. This book contains a collection culled from the Letters to the Editor section of the paper, submitted by the intelligent, the witty, the grumpy and the occasionally downright weird people who are part of the readership. The letters cover the period from the last general election in 2010 through our recent experiment in Conservative/Liberal coalition government, and give a great flavour of the issues and scandals that have exercised the minds of retired colonels and maiden aunts in the leafy suburbs of Conservative England. While I try not to discourage anyone from any good book, this one is really only for UK political geeks. Many of the entries are humorous, but a lot of them depend on the reader knowing the personalities and politics of contemporary Britain.

The selection is grouped under headings such as Goodbye Gordon, Chillaxing Conservatives, Swivel-eyed Loons, etc. If you don't get these references, then I suggest the book is not for you. However, if you do, from whatever side of the political spectrum you hail, you will probably find this as entertaining as I did. There's no doubt that Letters to the Editor has become a competitive sport in Britain with people vying to be the funniest or the most intelligent or the most condescending as their character dictates, and the result is some very fine humour, intentional or otherwise. The book is also a lighthearted reminder of some of the treasured political moments of the last five years - just the thing to read during the current general election campaign to remind us not to take it all so seriously. Buffoons exist on either side of the political divide, so at least while they're wrecking the economy and destroying our society, we can be sure our politicians will always entertain us...

Mastering Perl is a toolbox full of very sharp tools. I can imagine myself presenting it to a junior co-worker, very somberly informing him, "It is time."

More likely, actually, I'd present him a few chapters ripped out of the book and rebound. It's not that there are chapters I object to, or that don't matter. It's that some of the chapters are about safety and responsibility, while others are about wielding deadly weapons. I want up-and-coming Perl programmers to know about taint mode, debugging, profiling, and good code formatting long before typeglobs, ties, or AutoSplit. I'd divide the chapters into "things you must learn to become a master of the language" and "things you had better know if you want to be considered a good professional."

The chapters are not particularly cumulative, and can be read out of order. If you're ready for the book in general -- which basically only means understanding the basics of packages, references, regex, objects, and closures -- you're ready for any chapter at any time. I read the chapters in order, and I was glad to switch between technical and procedural topics. It let my brain rest a little between bouts of dense code.

My main concern is the lack of warning given on a number of tools discussed. brian begins, in the first chapter, by saying that coverage does not mean endorsement, but I don't think that's quite strong enough in some cases. The first chapter discusses some regular expression techniques, and casually mentions using $&, with no mention of the long-standing performance bug this introduces. Maybe I'm being silly, but it seems like such an easy and worthwhile thing to mention -- especially since the section in which $& is discussed is actually about @-, which can be used to efficiently replace $&. (As a side note, while reading this chapter, on what was effectively the fourth page of the book's real material, I saw $#- casually used in some code. That is when I realized that this book was not going to screw around.)

Another chapter is devoted to tied variables, which are fantastically fun, but can also be a major source of headaches. Maybe brian's thinking is that any real master will be able to make his own judgement on the subject. Still, without an included warning about the danger of a few topics, I'll definitely have to red ink a few margin notes on the office copy.

My worries about sharp tools, though, are far outweight by the excellent explanations of the features covered by the book. brian's explanation of a few features of Perl really, really cleared a few things up for me. I feel fairly at home in Perl, but there are a number of features that I've always felt were never going to stick with me, and that I'd always need to refer to the docs on. Among these were the regex position bits (/g, /c, and \G), which I've used, but always with perldoc open; also, pack, which I've only ever used in its simplest form. After reading the explanations of both in Mastering Perl, I almost didn't notice that I had quietly internalized the concepts. One of my notes actually reads, "p219: pack: I get it now!"

I think this is because of the extremely straight-forward presentation of the material. It doesn't go to great lengths to create elaborate scenarios. It says, "Here is a feature. This is how it works. Here are a few examples. Now you understand." brian's paragraph on pack was far, far more useful as a learning tool than the four hundred lines of pack documentation in perldoc. What's even better, though, is that now I can look at that perldoc and understand everything it says quite easily.

This kind of excellent, straightfoward explanation of fairly complex topics is present throughout the book, and is the best reason to pick it up.

Finally, I had a few typographical quibbles with the book. There are a number of footnotes throughout the book, and that's fine, but rather than using numbers or sticking to a commonly-seen set of characters, the footnote markers are unusual. I think it progresses in each chapter: asterisk, dagger, double-dagger, funky || symbol, and possibly others. The asterisk looks lousy and the || is just weird, and not immediately obvious as a footnote marker. I don't understand the thinking. Much worse, though, the monospace at sign (@) used in printing the book is from another planet. It hardly looks like an at sign at all. Given the quantity of @'s seen in Perl code, this is extremely distracting, and should really be fixed before O'Reilly prints more Perl books.

So, I had a few concerns about journeymen programmers picking up dangerous tools, and I didn't like the at sign. These are pretty small concerns, in the end, when compared with the quality of the material. It's very clear, and covers most of the topics I'd expect in a book like this, and covers most of them quite thoroughly. I'd want this on the shelf at any office that might hire non-masters, and I'd want those employees to have their hearts set on one day understanding everything in Mastering Perl.

Essential follow-up reading to The Llama and The Alpaca
By Thing with a hook
If you've made it through Learning Perl and Intermediate Perl, you've probably been waiting with no small impatience for a book like this to round off the trilogy and your basic Perl education. If you're interested in Perl as a complete programming language, or want to be able to read and understand the rest of the Perl literature, then you need this.

Note that the thrust of the book is about providing the information you need to use Perl to build applications, so there's nothing about Perl internals, or embedding Perl or dropping down to C to speed things up. For that sort of thing, you might want to look at the various editions of Advanced Perl Programming.

Stylistically, Mastering Perl is a bit of a departure from the previous two books in the series. Gone is the tutorial feel, and there's no overarching pop culture theme to the examples. Instead, you're assumed to be competent and ready to develop your own code, and brian d foy's style treats the reader as an equal.

There are two types of material covered in the book. The first rounds off the rest of the Perl language not covered in the first two books. These are all things which are not exactly necessary for every day programming, but which anyone motivated sufficiently to learn enough Perl to be interested in this book will just want to know. Typeglobs, the symbol table and tied variables top this list. Additionally, there are excellent chapters on error handling and advanced regular expressions, the latter of which introduces the options and anchors used in lexing, and look-ahead and look-behind assertions.

The other material covers useful libraries for developing in Perl. Examples include chapters devoted to documentation with POD, serialization, logging, debugging, profiling, and benchmarking. These are all comprehensive and use fairly long examples with non-trivial code.

You could cobble together a minority of the material presented in this book from other sources (e.g. some of the stuff on ties or the symbol table), such as Effective Perl Programming, Perl Medic, Perl Debugged or Object Oriented Perl (and there's a helpful Appendix which recommends several such books as further reading), but having it presented here in one cohesive whole is a far superior learning experience, thanks to the author's clear explanations and copious examples. Additionally, there's stuff here that you just won't find in those other books (e.g. do you know what the PROPAGATE method does on an object?). I'd like to think I've read most of the important Perl books, but I still learnt a lot, and it filled in a lot of holes. It's bang up to date, too, which many of the other books you'd otherwise be relying on can't claim to be.

Overall, this fills a gaping void in the Perl literature and provides a suitable bridge between Intermediate Perl and the likes of Perl Cookbook and Perl Best Practices. It's an excellent, focussed book which provides almost everything you need to do real Perl programming.

Great "used" books
By Mark T. Bollenbeck
It was in much better condition that I thought. Never know what to expect, but hey it's worth a chance for a great price. I was surprise to see it was in excellent condition, since it was rated as "very good" condition. It looks like a new book to me. That's why I keep buying "used" books from Amazon.

From Publishers Weekly
Harvard Business School professor Poorvu writes a very good book for a very specific readership: people who want to invest or build careers in real estate. This well-organized text shows what a typical life in real estate is like so that newcomers can decide whether the field is right for them. It also offers advice on how to grow real estate investments for people who are already in the industry. The book is divided into four stages: starting out looks at how to begin a real estate career by getting your first job (with tips as specific as résumé suggestions and as broad as finding a focus); scaling up focuses on what to do after you're established (such as making the decision to grow or stay small); hedging your bets discusses potential crises in the field; and taking stock looks at later career steps. Throughout these chapters, further subheadings make the material easy to navigate. Poorvu includes a variety of real world stories about people and their career experiences to make for an interesting read with a practical edge. (Mar.)

This read, preceded by Poorvu's "The Real Estate Game" is a *must-read* for aspiring Real Estate entrepreneurs!
By Luis G. Lopez C
Although this book is a distant second to Poorvu's (same author) The Real Estate Game: The Intelligent Guide to Decision-Making and Investment, I highly recommend it to anyone with a serious interest in a Real Estate career. Poorvu's "hands-on" approach permeates throughout both books, and in Creating and Growing Real Estate Wealth: The 4 Stages to a Lifetime of Sucess, we get to live & breathe the careers & choices of a half-dozen varied, successful Real Estate entrepreneurs. From "attention to detail" and "sweating the small stuff", to "thinking big" and "executing relentlessly," there are clear & real-life examples of success avenues, pitfalls and a multitude of categories in which a Real Estate entrepreneur can flourish, anywhere in the World. Poorvu's honesty and love of the industry is engraved in every word, as well as his advice on life in general, which is also refreshing. I highly recommend Real Estate enthusiasts to *begin* with The Real Estate Game and then move on to Creating and Growing Real Estate Wealth. For those who couldn't attend Harvard during Dr. Poorvu's classes, I am guessing this "combo" is almost the next-best thing :)

Like good wine in an old damaged bottle
By Reuben Antebi
Like good wine in an old damaged bottle. The contents of this book are great, but sadly, the spine of the book fell apart during my first read. All of the pages are now falling out one-by-one. The book is very poorly made.
